Motivation
Way back in the 1990s, Yahoo! was the leading search engine and online media company. However, the modern day Yahoo! is not the same strong company. The frequent changes in the top leadership, the layoffs and disappointing financial performance, made investors and the market worry about its future. Will it be another Netscape, which was acquired by another big Internet giant? Yahoo has already rejected overtures by Microsoft and Google to acquire it. Its future is still haunted by diminishing search business and discouraged workforce that sees no real leadership in top ranks. Facing this crisis, Yahoo appointed a new CEO, Marissa Mayer in July, 2012. Our motivation is to analyze her leadership since she took the baton from her predecessor. Will her leadership make Yahoo! turn around and bring a long-term success to Yahoo!?
Introduction
Marissa Mayer, joined Yahoo! as the 5th CEO in 5 years. She is presented with the problem of rejuvenating a falling Internet giant. Yahoo! has become a good company from a stellar company. It's domain still shows up in the Top 5 leading websites in Alexa's rankings. However, the company has lost its sheen and it needs a true transformational leader to change its fortunes. Is Marissa Mayer right for this job? Do we see that kind of leader in her?
