Speech of His Excellency Benigno S. Aquino III
President of the Philippines
At the dedication rites of Cory Aquino Democratic Space and Henry Sy, Sr. Hall

[Delivered at the De La Salle University, Taft Avenue, Manila, on February 13, 2013]

Thank you. Good evening. Please sit down.

Secretary Armin Luistro; Secretary Cesar Purisima (should be here, is he here already? He has reduced a lot that’s why I missed him); of course, the man of the hour, Secretary Gil delos Reyes; Bro. Ricky Laguda; Mr. Jose Titoy Pardo who was the first to text me that our stock market breached a new high at 6,500 [applause]; Mr. Hans Sy; Ms. Tessie Coson; Mrs. Sy; of course, our very virtuous, very productive, very energetic Congresswoman Em Aglipay [applause]; former Congresswoman Risa Hontiveros Baraquel; board of trustees, alumni, donors, officials, and staff of the De La Salle University; fellow workers in government; honored guests; ladies and gentlemen
Good evening.

Whenever I set foot on this campus, I remember that this is hallowed ground. I understand that yesterday, we observed the 68th anniversary of the massacre in De La Salle College, which happened during the Second World War. Sixteen brothers and twenty-four civilians were killed that day, some of whom, I’m told, were relatives of mine. As we pay tribute to their memory, we are again reminded of how peace is the bedrock of happiness, prosperity, and national progress. It is the foundation upon which the Lasallians that followed helped rebuild not just a prestigious university, but an entire country.

You know I am not from here, I guess that’s obvious, but in many ways, I share the same values that you are taught in this school. La Salle has always made a point to stand for truth and accountability—with my mother during our struggle against the dictatorship, or during the decades after we reclaimed democracy through People Power. Despite being from the other school, I also have a special fondness for this

For the nine African American students, going to Little Rock was full of bullying, racial slurs, and even physical pain. “ On some days I found myself thinking every waking moment about nothing else but my safety- consumed with learning skills that would keep me alive.” ( Beals, 124). Most of the students, if not all, were scared and feared that…

In the column, “University of Oklahoma Frat Boys and Girls Need to Own Up to Their Racist Behavior,” Grigsby calls out the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) members that were caught on camera reciting a racist chant against black people. Grigsby described it as soul-crushing verbal abuse, and she likened the singing of the chant on the party bus to Ku Klux Klan (KKK) gatherings that were held to plan horrific wrongdoings against blacks. Grigsby used pathos by playing on our morals and emotions to explain why what those frat boys was wrong; she used history to back up her claim, and she mentioned the KKK to evoke a feeling of disgust and outrage over what transpired on the SAE party bus. The use of pathos throughout Grigsby’s columns aided her in conveying the tone and theme she intended for the reader to have. Grigsby elicits your moral conscience and calls upon you to acknowledge that what occurred was…

This year’s event we did the theme of Remembering Our Students/ Recordando Nuestros Estudiantes. In relation to the current movements regarding Black Lives Matter, police brutality, Ayotzinapa 43, school shootings, and indigenous women missing. I think this event is important to our campus, because SCSU is a diverse campus with very close minded individuals. So this brings the aspect of culture and tradition with the Dia de Los Muertos celebration and MEChA’s activist focus of political issues. These two combined can provide knowledge and awareness to those students who are unaware or misinformed. As well as taking on the problem of cultural appropriation with the recent American popularization of sugar skulls and Dia de…

This school was named after a hero. A man who made mistakes but tried to fix them. He was one of the first men in this city after the civil war to try and unite the black and whites together. But do you think he would be happy having the school he was named after divided because of the reminders of the war? Though he was a rebel, that does not mean we have to stay the rebels. It is past the time for a change. We need to stay up to date in our teaching methods as well as our social understanding for one another. We should not forget our past, but we do not need to live in it daily or have a reminder of it daily. Our goal as a school is to teach the students. But if something is impacting their learning ability and we do not do anything about…

For my entire life of schooling, both my parents and I would agree that I constantly complained about the educational systems in which I was enrolled. But when I actually take the time to think about everything I have been through, I realize that I have indeed had an excellent education. My schooling was full of opportunities and experiences, all of which contributed to the person I am today; adequate education has been an indispensable facet of my being. Sadly, not everyone has had this same privilege. And now as a college student, I am becoming even more aware of this sad fact. Looking around me in such a diverse city as Chicago, I find myself being more and more grateful. When I read Jonathan Kozol's Fremont High School, this these feelings were even more reassured.…

“The veterans are coming! The veterans are coming!” Edward F. Palm posted his article in September 2008. In Palm’s article, he think it’s good to know that after the soldiers come from war some of the veterans are ready for a post-secondary education by used the G.I. Bill education benefits in order to attend colleges or universities. Palm gives advice to teachers and staff from college and universities on how to treat veterans on campuses. Edward Palm uses personal stories and gives some advice that helps veterans feel confident when they go back to school. Also Palm makes readers believe his credibility by employing pathos and ethos appeal combined in sufficient evidence with friendly and proud tone that creates and affective argument. In fact, this society has started to change since his appeal published. Most parts of his appeals already become facts. I interviewed few people who are working right now at campus strongly supported this cheering discovery.…

I hope that I will have the opportunity to love life, and show love toward others, at Calvin.…

It was coldest November day when my friend and I went to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. Coming here brought back a lot of memories because I feel like Civil Rights was the majority of what we studied in grade school. From the minute I parked I saw the 16th St Baptist Church that was bombed many years ago. I remember taking field trips there when I was a child. Walking through the building was like taking a journey through Birmingham’s contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and human rights struggles. The most familiar part of the institute was going past Martin Luther King Jr.’s exhibit. I always enjoyed hearing his speeches because he has so much passion when he spoke. He actually helped me out in my speech class my freshman year.…
