Year 11 Persuasive Speech
The terrorists wanted a well-known church to be bombed on Christmas Eve in Egypt; they forced Pearl, a former CIA agent to take on this mission. Is Pearl going to find a way out, or is she going to kill innocent people to save one life – her kidnapped daughter?!

On this bright windy night; the moon was shining as if to give a sense of distant hope. The smell of salty water filled the night. The meeting will be on Miami beach in Alexandria, Egypt, the city known as the Pearl of the Mediterranean. Alexandria boasted soft, white sandy beaches that stretched from one end of the city to the other. Pearl thought it was a shame she wasn’t here on vacation, there was so much to do and see.
The waves were lapping at a distance, shimmering in the bright

Knowing the targeted church, the time the bomb is to explode, and other pertinent information, didn’t make the mission any easier. Tonight, the goal was to pick up the components used to fabricate the radio-controlled Improvised Explosive Device. Pearl must incorporate a mobile phone into it, when that phone receives a paging signal, the IED explodes. This IED will be placed in her purse on Christmas Eve, she is to forget her purse in the church under a pew and leave.
Still walking on the beach, Pearl thought to herself how this must be her worst Christmas ever. Realizing if this mission succeeded, innocent people will die because they are Christians who want to celebrate Christmas Eve in Church. Thinking of all the people who will not celebrate Christmas with their families again, Parents will lose their children; children will lose one or both parents - this was real terrorism, Pearl didn’t know who was behind all this. This deadly attack targeted the country's religious minority to stir sectarian divisions. Her heart-wrenched at killing that many people for no reason, guilt flooded over her, she felt chills going through her whole body.
Pearl must put a stop to this at the same time as rescuing her daughter back in LA, California. This was one impossible mission; help was necessary from other close agent friends to get through this. A plan was already in place, and there was no time to

There are 3 different times Pearl was resourceful in To Vanquish the Dragon. One is where she helped save her best friend from the cruel and appalling prisons of the Nazis. They held her friend hostage and tortured her for the information regarding the whereabouts of her father. It bothered Pearl so much that she decided to take matters into her own hands to help her friend. With the German that she knew and learned in school she helped save her friend. She went to go to meet with Handke, the chief of Devisenstelle, and spoke to him in her finest German to advocate for her friend's release. She used her imagination to make up a story about why her friend didn't know the whereabouts of her father. "He doesn't provide for his wife and children. But you are a just man ... you wouldn't want an innocent girl to suffer for her cruel uncaring father." She also used flattery to help change his mind. Later on her friend was released with the name of Pearl mentioned.…

Pearl’s isolation and her reliance upon her mother has led to her not being able to form relationships between other people. In the story, Pearl is conceived by the unfortunate crime of adultery. She is isolated from everyone but her mother, Hester. Hester is the only person Pearl interacts with in a loving way throughout the story. Pearl is very protective of Hester; when the children were making fun of Hester Pear, “. . . snatching up stones and fling at them, (Hawthorne 64).” This shows how she stands up for her mother and only her mother. Because of Hester committing adultery, Pearl is seen as a product of sin and not a single towns person will like Pearl because of their compliance to their faith. Pearl is described by the townspeople…

The product of Hester’s sin and agony, Pearl was a painfully constant reminder of her mother’s violation of the Seventh Commandment: Thou shalt not commit adultery. Hester herself felt that Pearl was given to her not only as a blessing but a punishment worse than death or ignominy. She is tormented by her daughter’s childish teasing and endless questioning about the scarlet “A” and it’s relation to Minister Dimmesdale and his maladies. After Pearl has created a letter “A” on her own breast out of seaweed, she asks her mother:…

Many people in the Puritan community believe that since Hester would not reveal the child’s father, that he must be the devil himself. Pearl has an uncanny perception of what goes on around her and constantly is seeking for the truth. The connection of Pearl to the letter and her constant obsession with finding truth leads us to believe that the letter means truth. Her excessively perceptive knowledge is almost supernatural. Hawthorne’s tone is one of a whimsical, mischievous, and capricious descriptions. Pearl’s main purpose seems to be to uncover the truth for the main characters. Once she completes her goal, “A spell was broken. The great scene of grief, in which the wild infant bore a party, had developed all her sympathies; and as her tears fell upon her father's cheek, they were the pledge that she would grow up amid human joy and…

The Pearl, by John Steinback, recalls a parable in the bible. In the novella, the pearl is the central symbol, and unlike in the bible, is never clearly defined. Kino, Juana, and Coyotito are affected the most by the product of the pearl. At first, the pearl is seen as a stroke of divine providence, but through-out the novella, it will bring misfortune. The flawless pearl is deceiving and its true essence contrasts between its apparent, good outcome, and its intended, bad outcome.…

PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events such as the military combat, natural disasters, terrorism incidents, or any major tragedy. This is common in the life of veterans and is the leading cause of suicide among veterans. A VA patient who survived in Baghdad shares his experience with PTSD and explains how he knew he had this disability. Many veterans speak out about this issue and describe their continuous anger, alcohol addiction, and constantly wanted to fight. They usually feel very isolated and distant from their loved ones. One patient states, “PTSD involves rocketing into extreme states of stress re-activity; in the form of terror, rage, and uncontrollable impulses, and plunging into equally extreme states of being shut-down—exhaustion, emotional numbing, despair, and dissociation”. PTSD is about having fear and anxiety, allowing veterans to rage with anger and different emotion. There are many factors to PTSD, which affects others in different ways; or example, using video games to keep them occupied, spending money due to the lack of impulse control because of changes in their brain, and even not obtaining another job.…
