Yellow Submarine Symbolism
Throughout literary history, color symbolism has played a prominent role in English literature; specifically, writers such as John Lennon and Paul McCartney to present day author, Michael Dorris, applied continental color symbolism it to their famous allegorical works Yellow Submarine and A Yellow Raft in Blue Water. Everyone needs a place of sanctuary and peace in this stressful world; the yellow submarine and the yellow raft exemplify that place of sanctuary that man continually seeks emphasized by the utilization of symbolism. Evidently, Yellow Submarine by the Beatles tells of a yellow submarine where one finds a safe haven and prosperity. Most don’t think twice as to why The Beatles made the submarine yellow; why not the blue submarine or the black submarine? Furthermore, The Beatles chose yellow because yellow has proven to be a color associated with joy, happiness, and leisure. Since the lyrical meaning in Yellow Submarine is about living in a place of “ease”, it is logical and clever to correlate the submarine with yellow. Upon further lyrical analysis, it states, “Our friends are all aboard; Many more of them live next door; As we live a life of ease; Every one of us has all we need,” not only does this bring comfort to the idea of one having everything they will ever need in life, but gives a warm feeling of also …show more content…

They are placed in the pod bay in a row that if viewed from left to right the order will be red, yellow and blue.If the reader looks at having a blue suit at the end of the row instead of a green one as disqualifying the analogy the green suit does show up at a key moment in the film. I think Kubrick put the blue suit in the pod bay to prevent the traffic light analogy from being too obvious. Significantly, the blue spacesuit, which does not fit into the color symbolism I am asserting, is never utilized by any character in the film. As all three traffic light colors are used in the film, let us examine how they are used and what it means. Poole wears the yellow suit. One possible reason for this is that a yellow suit stands out better against a background of outer space than any of the other…

In writing, authors use symbolism to relay a deeper meaning to what they actually write. This technique captures important elements and gives the reader an idea of the theme of the story without the author directly telling them. Louise Erdrich uses symbolism to help emphasize and reveal the themes and message of her stories. “The Red Convertible,” by Erdrich, is a story about brotherly love as the highest value between two brothers, Lyman and Henry, and also about the difficulties veterans of war and their families face at post-war times. Symbolism plays a big part in this story, revealing the hardships Henry brings home from the battlefields of Vietnam, and to show Lyman's difficulties with handling separation and distance from his brother.…

The use of language is a powerful tool used by authors to provide complexity and a deeper level of thinking for the audience. Authors such as Shakespeare and Tim O’ Brien use immense language that provides the deeper meaning for the reader. The use of imagery and symbolism in the novel The Things They Carried significantly impacts the reader’s emotions about the Vietnam War. Other language is seen through George Orwell’s Animal Farm, which uses symbolism to relate the novel back to the history of Stalin and the Russian Revolution of 1917. Through the use of powerful language, authors are able to influence the actions and ideas in a society.…

I strongly agree with the statement ‘the use of symbolism is the best way to shed light on the darker or deeper messages of a text’. A text that exemplifies the statement is Barbara Kingsolver’s novel ‘The Poisonwood Bible’. Symbolism was used in the text to highlight the darker and deeper messages of the text. ‘The Poisonwood Bible’ is a novel about a missionary family, the Prices, who in 1959 move from the U.S. state of Georgia to the village of Kilanga in the Belgian Congo. Kingsolver’s purpose in the text was to tell a story of destruction, not only of the Price family but also of the Congo.…

Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense. Symbols are used throughout literature to further explain a major theme. For instance, Ernest Hemingway uses many symbols in “Hills Like White Elephants”. In Hemingway’s short story, the main characters are a man referred to as “the American,” and a women referred to as just “the girl” and sometimes the nickname jig, both the American and the girl are discussing something important but as the readers we do not know exactly what the two characters are communicating about. The symbols used in the short story, such as the landscape, white elephants, the train, and the beaded curtain, gives the readers an…

techniques in How to Read Like a Professor ‘How to Read Like a Professor’ is a book that discusses several broad yet detailed techniques of reading. While I am positive everyone who reads this book knows how to read, they may not know how to read to fully comprehend all of a volume, even that which is not on the page. One such technique that really helps to reveal much about a story is symbolism, or the use of something to represent something else usually not in the story. Symbolism is important to know how to recognize because it can easily change a significant amount of a story. Some things are so closely associated with forces of nature that descriptions of the environment often infer undertones and meaning.…

The color yellow, when mentioned in the text, represents Henry feeling like a coward and knowing his actions were cowardly. Crane uses the color yellow more in the beginning as Henry was just learning to become a soldier. As the book goes on and Henry matures, the color yellow is not mentioned as often. The color yellow appears in the first chapter when Henry's mother states that enlisting is a bad idea. He feels his mother's words were putting a "yellow light upon the color of his ambitions." This is a significant statement because at this point in the book, Henry's cowardice has not yet emerged and his only visions of battle are of him becoming a brave, heroic soldier. Henry's feelings switch from confidence to cowardice as he runs away from his very first battle. When he looks back at the battlefield with shame, he can see nothing but yellow fog. Crane intended this yellow fog to represent Henry's feelings of cowardice after running from his first opportunity of battle. The color yellow appears again in chapter nineteen, as Henry is about to face another battle. The guns that are fired are described as having a yellow…

Symbols are everywhere, embodying meanings larger than life. One can find symbolism in music, literature, and even in decoration! They play huge roles in specific themes or emotions in certain situations. In “Masque of the Red Death”, by Edgar Allan Poe, death is personified, terror reigns, and tragedy strikes, as he tells a short tale of the infamous “Black Plague” that reigned over Europe in the middle ages, and how death is absolutely inevitable. In the story, Poe used an intense amount of symbolism within the seven colored chambers to establish the mood of the story, the seven stages of life, and to emphasize the terror of the situation.…

The word literature has a great meaning in everyday life and comes in so many different ways. The body of written works of a language, period, or culture with the imaginative or creative writing especially of recognized artistic value (Houghton Mifflin Company, 2011) is the dictionary meaning. Lyrics, poems, short stories are all kinds of literature and many authors will write something they are passionate about or have an interest in. Many instances there are times a writer will write about a particular subject or within a certain genre and they write in a manner that sometimes had a hidden meaning. To know the hidden meaning the author will use symbolism, and as a writer and reader it helps to understand the elements that go into writing a poem, short story, and lyric. The writer goes through a process of creating a theme which helps to set the tone and will help them to develop the plot. Many times an author when writing a poem or lyric will not always have a character, but will have some sort of setting that resulted from the theme. All of the elements of literature need to have been put into place, and in many times the writer will also put a hidden meaning into the story, poem, or lyrics which the reader needs to read between the lines. Symbolism can be revealed in the theme, the tone or the plot of the story, poem and lyric. To find the underlying meaning or the symbolism the author is trying to portray the reader needs to be familiar with the elements of literature. The story “Used to Live Here Once” by Jean Rhys, the poem “The Road not Taken”, by Robert Frost, and the poem “My Papa’s Waltz”, by Theodore Roethke, follow the elements of literature, and have the symbolism that if the reader was not familiar with could miss the meaning of the story or poem.…
