Yellow Wallpaper Short Story Answer
This was a homeword assignment from my Intro to Literary Studies. We had to choose a paragraph from Yellow Wallpaper and write a one page analysis of the story.

1-There are things in that paper that nobody knows but me, or ever will.
2-Behind that outside pattern the dim shapes get clearer every day.
3-It is always the same shape, only very numerous.
4-And it is like a woman stooping down and creeping about behind that pattern. I don 't like it a bit. I wonder -- I begin to think -- I wish John would take me away from here!
My Response

1 After studying and obsessing with the yellow wallpaper in a short period of time, she really believes the paper has hidden secrets only she can uncover. What may just be an intricate pattern to others, appears to be more defined than just being an inanimate object.
2 The narrator’s close examination of the paper has her thinking that the more she stares and observes it, the more obvious the solution. She conceives there are two patterns, an outside and inside that can be argued as being a symbolic representation of sanity and insanity, which at this point of the story, she is brinking towards the insanity or outside norm. It could also be seen as metaphoric between her husband’s theory that she isn’t sick, just tired and her fully believing she is sick. Like some believe we will see light at the end of our lives to follow, the narrator is seeing the outside pattern getting clearer each day she examines it.
3 Continuing with the theory that she is being more insane than being normal, she can identify with the outside pattern being the same but at the same time, vague. Just like what’s going on inside of her as well as around her, everything seems to being sort of déjà vu, but at a closer look, everything’s shifted. She thinks she has it all figured out and begins to focus on the wallpaper and its own importance in her life.
4 Although the narrator wants to have independence from John, their child, and Jennie, but gets

In the summer of 1855 a mentally ill woman moves into a secluded estate with her husband. She immediately voices her concerns about the eerie feeling she gets in the house and how much she hates the yellow wallpaper, but like always, her husband disregards her concerns and insists that he knows best because he is a doctor. She also believes that she was born to be a writer, but her husband forbids her from writing or communicating with other people and insists that she stay in bed to rest. Much like a prisoner in solitary confinement, the narrator starts to lose her mind. She begins to fixate her entire life on the wallpaper while she spends her days in bed. She started keeping a journal which he hid from her family, and in it, she writes about how she ‘discovered’ a creeping woman trapped behind the pattern. She centers her life on freeing this woman by locking the door and attempting to tear off all of the wallpaper. When her husband comes home from work, he breaks down the door, sees the mess, and faints. Then the woman crawls out of the room and the story seems to be over, but there has got to be more. This woman is not simply your Martha Stewart of the 1800s that doesn’t like her bedroom wallpaper. The job of the reader is to break down the roles of each character, analyze the major symbols, evaluate the theme and use them like the pieces of a puzzle to understand what the author, Charlotte Perkins Stetson, was trying to say.…

In the beginning the narrator still had quite a grasp on reality and just did not prefer the color, pattern or condition of the wallpaper. She then starts picking apart every aspect of the wallpaper to the point of obsession which is her picking apart the details of her own life. She really starts getting sucked into her illness when she starts describing the woman trapped behind the wallpaper as she is trapped not only in life but in her mind as well. She gets progressively worse when she believes the woman behind the wallpaper is helping her tear down the wallpaper so they both can escape. When she finally goes off the deep end is when the description of the wall paper stops. There is no more wallpaper or woman trapped behind it just the narrator lost in her own…

In “The Yellow Wallpaper,” the reader is presented with the many different emotions and perspectives of the narrator as she sees images of a woman in the wallpaper. The author, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, successfully makes this event interesting and significant. Some may see the lady behind the wallpaper as something the narrator sees because she is “crazy” or imagines for no other reason than boredom. However, only one thing must be true as various parts in the story allude and point to. The narrator is the woman trapped in the wallpaper, and the narrator reflects on her feelings of imprisonment within reality and her own mind.…

Within the room that Jane spends most of her time, one of the first things she describes in detail is the wallpaper. Jane believes the “wall and paint look as if a boys’ school had used it” and she continues, “I never saw a worse paper in my life” (Gilman, “The Yellow Wallpaper, 610). As the weeks pass, Jane spends more and more time in the room, where she is locked away from society and social interaction. Gilman writes that Jane sees that the wallpaper has, “a recurrent spot where the pattern lolls like a broken neck and two bulbous eyes stare at you upside down” (“The Yellow Wallpaper” 611). Jane begins to see patterns and images within the wallpaper because she is confined by her husband’s treatment. When John stripped her of the opportunity to write, Jane was forced to find a new way to engage her mind and express herself. Jane wants to keep this new found way of expressing herself out of the hands of her husband and his sister, Jennie. Gilman writes, “I have watched John when he did not know I was looking, and come into the room suddenly o the most innocent excuses and I’ve caught him several times looking at the wallpaper! And Jennie too. […] I am determined that nobody shall find it out but myself!” (“The Yellow Wallpaper” 615). Jane slowly comes to the realization that there is not only a pattern within the wallpaper, but also a woman trapped behind it. Rula comments on the woman within the wallpaper and how it affects…

The most obvious conflict the narrator has to deal with is living in the room with the yellow wallpaper and differentiating creativity from reality. The narrator becomes fond of the wallpaper and feels an excessive need to figure out the pattern. She says, “I know a little of the principle of design, and I know this thing was not arranged on any laws of radiation, or alternation, or repetition, or symmetry, or anything else that I have ever heard of” (Gilman 224). Her days become preoccupied with the wallpaper and she feels a distinct connection to it. While she tries to decode the wallpaper’s pattern, her creativity allows her to see a face in the wallpaper. She says, “There is a recurrent spot where the pattern lolls like a broken neck and two bulbous eyes stare at you upside down” (Gilman 223). As she continues to study the wallpaper, she comes to believe that she sees a woman creeping in the chaotic wallpaper who is trapped behind it: “The front pattern does- and no wonder! The woman behind shakes it!” (Gilman 227). She begins to have a bond with this woman and can relate to her. The woman in the wallpaper is essentially the narrator. They are similar in the sense that they are both trapped and unable to escape. Towards the end of the story, the narrator reaches a state of insanity where she can no longer differentiate herself from the figure she sees in the wallpaper. She tells us, “I suppose I shall have to get back behind the pattern when it comes night, and that is…

She does not like when John or Jennie touch it, and is terrified that they may all see the same thing that she sees within the boundaries of the yellowed wallpaper: bars made of the darker parts of the wallpaper, trapping the woman in the lighter, peeled parts within the bars confines. Another symptom that would fall under having a serious mental disorder, is hallucinations. She may not see multiple beings within her hallucinations, but it is made very prominent throughout the story, that she does see the woman trapped behind the darker wallpaper on many occasions. “Sometimes I think there are a great many women behind, and sometimes only one, and she crawls around fast, and her crawling shakes it all over”(page 10). Not only does she see the the woman in the wallpaper, but, eventually, she believes that she has become the woman within the wallpaper. “I suppose I shall have to get back behind the pattern when it comes night, and that is hard! It is so pleasant to be out in this great room and creep around as I please!”(page…

Instead of sleeping at night, the narrator “kept still and watched the moonlight on that undulating wallpaper till [she] felt creepy.” This demonstrates how much the narrator has been absorbed into the wallpaper. The wallpaper now controls the narrator to the point where she sleeps by day and examines the wall paper at night. By spending more nights to analyze the wallpaper, the narrator notices that “it changes as the light changes.” At this point, it is clear that the narrator has been utterly consumed by the wallpaper. for the narrator to see an inanimate object move reveals that she had been trapped in a figment of her own imagination. As the narrator “watch[es] [the wallpaper] always,” she implicitly discloses that the wallpaper has trapped her in a manner similar to how her husband trapped her in the…

The narrator describes her illness and her husband’s take on her treatment. Her thoughts give detailed insight into her mind as the narrator enters the state of a psychotic breakdown. The narrator’s thoughts describe her reasoning for not getting well faster. “John is a physician, and perhaps-(I would not say it to a living soul, of course, but this is dead paper and a great relief to my mind) –perhaps that is one reason I do not get well faster.”(224) The narrator expresses her concerns on paper and wonders if this has any effect on her wellbeing. John has confined her to a room in which she initially dislikes the yellow wallpaper. “I’m really getting quite fond of the big room, all but that horrid paper.”(226) The narrator’s initial thoughts on the yellow wallpaper are that it is horrid. She is confined in a room, picked by her husband, and for some reason she is unable to figure out the pattern to the yellow wallpaper. “It makes me think of all the yellow things I ever saw-not beautiful ones like buttercups, but old foul, bad yellow things”.(226) She continues to look into the pattern, without actually figuring it out. The narrator is becoming used to the yellow wallpaper and its qualities. She smells the wallpaper everywhere in the house and even so, when she is out of the house. Unbeknownst to her, the smell of the wallpaper begins to creep around her the more…
