What is Yerba Mate?
Yerba Mate is a small tree native to the subtropical Atlantic forests of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. This evergreen member of the holly family was introduced to modern civilization to the indigenous Guarani of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil. It was first scientifically classified by Swiss botanist Moses Betoni, who settled in Paraguay in 1895.
The Yerba Mate tree looks like an orange tree, with evergreen leaves, greenish-white flowers, and red fruits. It grows up to 15 meters tall, and can produce for about 40 years.
