Yoga Observation
The Rhythm of Your Breath.
The Atlanta Yoga is a studio that is housed in a loft located in Midtown West. Atlanta Yoga has been opened for about six years and it offers many levels of yoga classes for the public. According to Ms. Adele Gale, the owner and director, Atlanta Yoga does not have a formal mission but is there to spread the form of yoga known as Ashtanga, which in Sanskrit means the eighth limb. This form of yoga works with synchronization of deep rhythmic breathing and movements. By regulating your breathing it aids your body with strengthening the body, helping with digestion, regulating metabolism and helps with decreasing blood pressure.
Upon entering the building, I was engulf in a wave of heat which Ms. Gale explained was there to aid in releasing unwanted toxins through perspiration. The lights were dimmed and the atmosphere was very relaxing with a hint of incense lurking in the air. The class was relatively full with an aura sense of serenity and tranquility amongst the participants.
After grabbing a studio mat I joined the rest of the class in the scorching heat. I now know what the web site meant when it advised us to wear as little as possible. During the seventy-five minutes class we did several exercises which all focused on the awareness of the breath. Positions like lying dog and sitting dog focused on maintaining regular breathing patterns. As we got further along in the exercises and different positions, the unbearable heat actually began to feel comfortable and after a while the sweat dripping off my nose no longer existed. The only thing going through your mind was the steady beat of your breath. It is not a class for you to sit and observe but a class that you must participant in to fully understand the concept of Ashtanga. This class allows you to become in tuned with your body and the rhythm of your lungs as it inhale and exhale. This is a class that I would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to be in tune

Bikram yoga was developed thirty years ago by Bikram Choudhury, a renowned Hatha Yoga Master. It is a specific yoga practice that is carried out in 105˚ F at 40% humidity for 90 minutes. Some studies and practitioners have suggested that Bikram yoga practice has positive impacts on physical health as well as decreasing stress and anxiety. There were certain inclusion criteria for participation in this study. Age was not an exclusion and participants ranged in age from 18 to over 60 years of age. This study sought to interview active students of Bikram yoga who have been practicing consistently for at least the last eight weeks, at a minimum of three times per week. Students meeting the requirements at the Bikram yoga studios in San Antonio were invited to complete the survey instrument from November 16 through November 26, 2011. Seventy-five students responded to the survey. The results indicated that there are significant positive results from regularly practicing Bikram yoga. Since Bikram yoga encourages students to hold poses in a “hot” room it increases heart rate and acts as a cardiovascular exercise without the high impact normally associated with cardio exercises. The results of the survey instrument yielded over 50% of respondents reporting an answer of “somewhat better” for all of the questions, indicating that most respondents see a benefit in their practice. Additionally, stress and anxiety decreased with over 80% of respondents reporting somewhat to much less anxious and stressed. Improvements to physical fitness were observed with over 90% reporting improved…

Yoga is a system of techniques that can be used for a number of goals, from simply managing stress better, learning to relax, and increasing limberness all the way to becoming more self-aware and acquiring the deepest knowledge of one’s own self. The core of Yoga’s philosophy is that everything is supplied from within the individual. Thus, there is no dependence on an external figure, either in the sense of a person or god figure, or a religious organization.…

Yoga is an exercise practiced for heath and relaxation having to do with breathing control while adopting specific body positions. Some conclusions have been pieced together about the history of yoga since the exact origin is uncertain. The first concrete evidence of yoga’s existence are some stones which have pictures on them of people doing various poses that resemble today’s yoga. These stones are thought to have been used around 3000 B.C. But even though there is not physical evidence of yoga before this, some scholars believe that its origin was before the stones were created. Since Stone Age Shamanism and yoga have similar characteristics, the scholars believe this is when yoga…

Immediately upon walking through the difficult to open double doors, the staunch odor of excessive butter fills my nostrils and causes me to ponder vomiting. A nacho cheese type stench mixes with the butter giving me an image of clogged arteries and high blood pressure. The candy behind the glass counter further adds to the 'heart attack waiting to happen' aura of this place. An air conditioning vent at the top of the wall is located perfectly in front of the bench I sit on and constantly blasts me in the face causing me to feel frigid. The horrific fabric on the bench feels like sandpaper. The voices of the dozens of people around me create a decibel level that…

    Yoga and Christianity

The author of “Yes to Yoga”, Agnieszka Tennant, seems to argue that yoga can easily be stripped of its Hindu implications. He says that even though it was originally Hindu, he is entirely invulnerable of being contaminated by any god or goddess apart from Christ. He was wise to implement the scenarios in which yoga is exercised today: inside secular American gyms. Not only did he powerfully demonstrate that all forms of Hinduism are nearly extinct from the yoga which is commonly practised, he went as far as to say that any Hindu gods or beliefs should be of no concern to a Christian. By comparing yoga to spiritual meat which he puts into his body, he was able to apply several verses from the book of Corinthians to support his argument that simply because yoga was originally Hindu, we are not under any obligation to abstain from it or “not put it in our mouths”. In summary, he defended his position that he would never be snatched away from a God as great as God the Father, especially by non-existent entities. Worship, according to him, is a conscious state of mind, and he would never hand his mind over to anyone except the God of the Bible. In short, he made a powerful stand saying that yoga should be a perfectly fine practice for any Christian to engage in, especially since he believed it brought him closer to God, the same way Hindus used it to bring them closer to their gods. However, his argument tends to be very subjective, lacking a universal point of view.…

Have you ever imagined of a room that sent such a good vibe that you thought it was too good to be true? Well, that is how this lunchroom was. When I walked in the first thing I say was the bright lit faces of the john Adams middle school students.Their faces were so astonishing that it but a big smile on my face. The poster filled walls were a bright baby blue with a hint of green. The tables were stunning. The colors were so remarkable that they were almost blinding. The pillars that stood high were covered with flyers of all colors. But the best thing of all was the smell coming from the cafeteria. It smelled like fresh pizza out of the oven. But what they were serving was much better than pizza, it was cheesy bread sticks. As my waiter…

Since 2014, I have assisted classes at Casa Yoga and because of my loyalty to this institution I have grown ties with the founder, teachers and the community. Currently, I am enrolled in a 200 hour teacher training and as part of the requirements of my certification I must teach a class of 20 or more students. Thus, with the support of my mentors, I decided to give my first class at Casa Yoga. In preparation for my first full class, I had to design the sequence of poses, I researched a variety of poses that would be rigorous yet could serve as a stress relief for my students. I found myself watching videos and reading illustrated yogi manuals to gather as much information as possible. Most importantly, I practiced everyday in my room to create…

The building I did my observations in was called the Johnson Center. It was a two-floor, dark and light brown building. The entrance on the outside of the Johnson Center was inviting, but once I went inside, there was a sadness that overcame my mood. There was also this distinctive scent, like mixed meatloaf and hand sanitizer, which attached itself in my nose during the entirety of my observations. The area I did my observations was located on the second floor, directly in the middle of the floor. There were five halls that lead from the dining room to the bedrooms of the residents, and to an “activity room” and the “living room,” which had couches, a TV, two parrots in a cage, and access to the outside patio area. But, the dining room area was the main focus of study of my observations.…
