Yonnondio: From The Thirties Analysis
In the novel Yonnondio: From the Thirties, Tillie Olsen tells a moving story

about a struggling, poor family who are easy to love. The Holbrook family lack

many necessities in life including money, nutrition, safety and happiness. They

begin their lives at a mining town in Wyoming where the sky is filled with black

clouds that fogs up the lungs of the residents. The family came to realization that

they deserve to live in a stress-free area rather than a high-risk detrimental place.

It was during this time that the Great Depression began and the Holbrooks

suffered even more alongside other families. Olsen does an outstanding job

luring the readers into falling in love with the family through the power of

sympathy I felt for each

I can’t help but want to give him a hug and enroll

him into school myself giving him a new entire wardrobe and to fill his belly at

Olive Garden.

The stress amount increases and the environment worsens. Olsen is not

giving her readers a break, the feeling of sympathy between the pages and

readers is still present. Giving us vivid details about the malnourished kids living

in terrible conditions. Mazie zones out into space while her dad tries to woo a

smile onto her face, but she gave him such a fake smile it forced Jim to become

speechless (23). The kids are still trying to work through all of this emotional and

physical pain that they will actually put on a fake face to make their parents

happy. This alone shows how smart and kind Mazie is, it makes my love for her

grow. She is definitely the one character that I admire most, her desire to learn

and her fearless actions; she can be a little mom herself. I can see parts of

myself in her, I love to learn new things, I love to babysit all the kids that I

possibly can, and I feel as if I have to carry my family on my back as well.

Wyoming is the nation's leading coal producer. The nation’s top 10 coal mines are situated here and has the world’s largest surface coal mining operations near Gillette. In 1868 the Union pacific railroad opened the first coal mine in carbon county. It was named Carbon county because extensive coal deposits were found there. "If we could see the air breathed by these poor creatures in their tenements," said a well-known physician, "it would show itself to be fouler than the mud of the gutters." Little improvement was apparent despite all that had been done. "The new tenements, that have been recently built, have been usually as badly planned as the old, with dark and unhealthy rooms, often over wet cellars, where extreme overcrowding is permitted," was the verdict of one authority.…

Elizabeth Strout’s novel, Olive Kitteridge, is filled with stories about the lives of regular people in Crosby, Maine. Throughout the stories, different characters are faced with adversity they are forced to deal with. While some handle their problems well and are able to cope with their hardships, others, even those with good intensions, do not find a happy ending. The story “Tulips” encapsulates the a recurring theme of the book; life is uncertain and takes us down roads upon which we had never imagined ourselves having to travel, and while these obstacles may very in their severity, it is how one is able to cope with their individual adversity that will ultimately determine their happiness.…

I think that by Danticat writing this book not only restores Uncles Josephs dignity and identity, but it also restores the image of her. Every section of the book has a good description of the good actions her Uncle Joseph did and the way Edwidge reacted to them. Danticat has a lot of love for her uncle and I believe that by her writing this book about him says a lot about the way she feels about her uncle. I honestly believe that even after her uncle’s death, his image is still alive and I think Edwidge did good job in keeping her uncle’s dignity and identity alive through her…
