about a struggling, poor family who are easy to love. The Holbrook family lack
many necessities in life including money, nutrition, safety and happiness. They
begin their lives at a mining town in Wyoming where the sky is filled with black
clouds that fogs up the lungs of the residents. The family came to realization that

I can’t help but want to give him a hug and enroll
him into school myself giving him a new entire wardrobe and to fill his belly at
Olive Garden.
The stress amount increases and the environment worsens. Olsen is not
giving her readers a break, the feeling of sympathy between the pages and
readers is still present. Giving us vivid details about the malnourished kids living
in terrible conditions. Mazie zones out into space while her dad tries to woo a
smile onto her face, but she gave him such a fake smile it forced Jim to become
speechless (23). The kids are still trying to work through all of this emotional and
physical pain that they will actually put on a fake face to make their parents
happy. This alone shows how smart and kind Mazie is, it makes my love for her
grow. She is definitely the one character that I admire most, her desire to learn
and her fearless actions; she can be a little mom herself. I can see parts of
myself in her, I love to learn new things, I love to babysit all the kids that I
possibly can, and I feel as if I have to carry my family on my back as well.
