Yossarian's Character In 'Catch-22'
Yossarian: Yossarian serves as the protagonist of Catch-22 and is a bombardier of his squadron. Yossarian differs from the average bombardier in that he views the war effort as a meaningless pursuit that simply takes the lives of the innocent. Yossarian does all he can to avoid flying missions, including feigning sicknesses to become hospitalized and moving the bomb line before the Bologna mission. He values life greatly, but in a rather selfish way; Yossarian does not find purpose in risking his own life to save those of countless others. However, when put in a dangerous position, he truly does care for his men and does what he can to keep them alive. Yossarian takes evasive action and does not care if he succeeds in his mission goals as

Captain John Yossarian possesses this aggressiveness, lack of morality, and courage characteristic of anti-hero, stemming from a desire to stay alive as long as possible. Major Sanderson diagnoses Yossarian, saying, “‘You have a morbid aversion to dying... You have deep-seated survival anxieties… It wouldn’t surprise me if you’re a manic-depressive!’” (Heller 303). This quote is important because it tells the reader why Yossarian is so aggressive and dishonest; he will do whatever it takes to stay alive. Clevinger also explains Yossarian’s behavior: “...a homicidal impulse to machine-gun strangers, retrospective falsification, and an unfounded suspicion that people hated him and were conspiring to kill him” (Heller 20). Along with this quote,…

Moreover, the story of the dead man in Yossarian's tent offers elements of grim irony in addition to the altered theme of appearance versus reality. A replacement pilot named Lieutenant Mudd initially joined the squadron temporarily due to the shortage of men and immediately left for a bombing mission. He died over Orvieto on his first and only mission, his body blown to pieces and never found. The lieutenant never officially signed in, thus it seems he never existed to begin with. When Yossarian hears the news regarding Mudd he notes, “ Mudd was the unknown soldier who had never had a chance, for that was the only thing anyone ever did know about all the unknown soldiers – they never had a chance. They had to be dead” (Heller 78). Yossarian…

The conditions they come to accept as ‘normal’ would strike anyone not accustomed to them as intolerable and Hibbert’s response, based on his instinct for self-preservation, may be seen as rational and in many ways understandable. However, his stance goes against the crucial military requirements of camaraderie and unity against the enemy and thus he loses the sympathy of the audience, even though he has, in all probability, been forced to go to war through conscription.…

The feeling of regret can weigh a person?s emotions beyond normalcy. As the story unfolds and the plane arrives in Chicago from San Francisco, Bohdan becomes immediately unsocial from an expected level. ?We stood apart, unlike the other soldiers and their families who were hugging and crying on each other?s shoulders in a euphoric delirium,? said Bohdan?s dad. Mentioned briefly in the beginning of the story was the fact that Bohdan?s dad was also in a war and had never spoken of it to anyone. As little words are exchanged, Bohdan?s dad finds himself wondering why his son has not told him any details of his journey. This is a realism that the father has had before in his own experiences. Zabytko then begins to tell the father?s story of regret in a lengthy description, including all of his war efforts. When regret is established one tends to dwell on that incident searching for a resolution.…

Yossarian was focused on death and how to escape it. He felt as if he was always being targeted, even though all of them were being attacked. When asked ‘"Who, specifically, do you think is trying to murder you?"’ Yossarian said that everyone was, The enemy was trying to kill them everyday. To Yossarian, always being targeted, was frightening, as it would to a sane person. To the others, they had accepted the fact that they were always on the brink of death, and stopped taking even the slightest of precautions. These men were not scared of dying, or at least did not appear to be. One of the biggest examples of this lack of care was McWatt flying his plane very close to the beach trying to scare the other men. This was an obviously dangerous…
