Epictetus, a slave turned philosopher, was interested in the idea of inner peace from a young age. After being freed, he wrote a book detailing the journey to inner happiness, “The Manual”. In this text, he states that the only things that you can control are the things within your mind. In order to reach inner peace, you must accept that some things are out of your control and you cannot change. The only thing you can do is respond to what others do unto you. The most important of these topics is that you cannot control your reputation. Although you can be a good person and make others think highly of you, since it is not within yourself, you cannot control what others think of you.
An example of this in the modern day is a researcher that cures cancer. The researcher doesn’t worry about his reputation, and has good intentions. The worker can work very hard every day and never complain and his boss will probably like him. He does whatever he can to get people in his company to like him but no matter what, there can always be someone that doesn’t like you. Your reputation can be influenced by your work ethic, but it can never be directly controlled. The worker does many things within his power, such as working hard and treating others with respect, but has no control over things out of his power. Even though people may not like you, it doesn’t matter if you have truly achieved inner peace. As Epictetus said, “But if you suppose that what really belongs to you does belong to you, and that what really belongs to another does belong to another, you will be free.
