You Don’t Look Indian
The short story “You Don’t Look Indian” is a story of a man who is Indian but throughout his life he is told he isn’t. The reason people don’t believe him is because of his pale skin, blue eyes, and dark hair. Even the Indians that he was around were thought of to be Mexican. This is due to the ignorance of the world, “anyone with dark skin and hair was automatically thought to be a Mexican”, says Greg. The Thing with Greg is he doesn’t know what he is because of being adopted. His mother was white he knew for a fact but she passed away when he was born due to the doctors giving her the wrong blood type. Now his father he never knew anything about, ran out on his mother before Greg was born but more will be said about him later. Greg would go from family to family of Pomo Indians living on farms looking for small jobs to do. Greg would do farm work such as milking cows and working with horses. He met many Indians during this time of his life and even learned bits and pieces of two types of Pomo Indian language. While Greg was in school his friends, who were mostly Indian, looked light skinned enough to where people thought they were Mexican so this is where his nickname “white beaner” came from but in reality his friends were mostly Indian and some being mixed with Spanish, Mexican, and other Hispanic races. One day Greg began to search for his father, he would talk to family members or anyone that could have had a connection to his father. When Greg found his Uncle, his mom’s younger brother, he said he remembered Greg’s father playing football back when they were young. He was a large, dark skinned, hairy man with the nickname “meatloaf” but his real name was Emilio. This was Greg’s first lead to where his father, who is 33 at this point, might be.
