decided to leave the Salem Village thinking he is going to run a patriotism errand. To Young Goodman, by doing this was part of serving his country. He believes he should do this since his father and grandfather did not do it by saying, “My father never went into the woods on such an errand, or his father before him.” We have been a race of honest men and good Christians since the days of the martyrs and shall I be the first of the name of Brown that ever took this path and kept”. Even though this was the beginning of Young Goodman

Brown’s journey, the author uses symbols, “He the forest, which barley stood aside to let the narrow path creep through, and closed immediately behind.” “The dreary road, gloomiest trees, narrow path creep,” represents the evil world that Young Goodman is starting to see. This represent the fact that Young good man Brown is aware of the journey he is about to make. Before reading the end of the story, I believed in how much Young Goodman was faithful enough to do this job. His strong believe in religion and praying showing in beginning of the story will later change from “We are a people of prayer, and good works to boo, and abide no such wickedness” to “There is no good on earth, and sin is but a name, come devil for to thee is this world given.” In my opinion whether or not one believes in god or not should have a good reason for his or her belief, because having faith is the first sign that will show everyone’s believe in a
religion. Young Goodman is showing with strong faith in him, because his faith can be seen through the initial description of faith. The beginning of the story gives a clear image of Young Goodman’s strong faith that he can leave his wife behind in the hands of god saying, “Say the prayers, dear Faith, and go to bed at dusk, and no harm will come to thee.” Hawthorne uses the word faith to show Goodman Brown’s good and strong faith. He continues his journey to encounter people that seemed to be very good but later calls them evil. Meeting the first person in the forest, Young Goodman is surprised of the way the guy is dressed as well as his staff. Faith is unavoidable for an example, even if we get to choose to believe only in ourselves the evidence we think of is pertinent. How are we going to interpret that evidence? what or who are we willing to believe in? we absolutely going to be believing in god. Saleh. 3 The man tells Goodman Brown of his acts that he has done. From here, Young Goodman’s doubts of the good word started occupying in his mind. Clearly, Young Goodman claims that his family members are Christians and good people. Though his faith in his family members was strong, the man tells Young Goodman that he knew Young Goodman wanted to go back to the Salem village. He seems to get mad after hearing this as if he knew is ashamed of his family members. He is probably thinking that his family had already gotten into the evil world before he realizes himself, “I marvel they never spoke of these matters, or verily, I Marvel not seeing that the least rumor of the sort would have driven them from New England, we are a people of prayer, and good works of boot and abide no such wickedness.” One of the assumptions that led Young Goodman to think of going back to Faith is the fact that he was starting to feel more scared and in fear of the devil in the forest. Coming across Goody Cloyse, Young Goodman is again inspired by his good faith in this “moral and spiritual adviser who taught him religion” but will later turn to be an evil witch in view. The Goody Cloyse who is a strong religion believer and a church attendant is one of the participants in the evil. Young Goodman claiming, “That old woman taught me my catechism, and there was a world of meaning in this simple comment.” Here is where the author finally showed that Young Goodman was collecting his thoughts and memories of Goody who to him taught what true religion is. To Young Goodman, Goody Cloyse is now a witch who easily accepted the part of the ceremony. This was showing in the story when Young Goodman cries, “What if a wretched old woman do choose to go to the devil when I thought she was going to heaven, is there any reasons why should quit my dear faith and go after her?” This is again Young Goodman testing his faith
