Hawthorne and “The Paradise of Bachelors and the Tartarus of Maids” written by Herman Melville.
While Hawthorne's short story revolved around love and adventure, Melville choose subjects that were
less written about. Writing about the order of the Templar's and doing what is needed to help a group.
The main character left his newly wed wife to go on a journey through the woods to get to the witch
trails in Salem. However in the woods Goodman Brown saw part of the trail play out right in front of
his eyes. After he saw things that had horrified him just as quickly as they came they disappeared again

Both authors use themes that are very familiar in books even written to this day. The main
theme in both is adventure, both men in the stories go on adventures that take them away from home
and the places they feel most comfortable. Goodman brown's travels into the woods is not a detailed
as the travels Melville wrote about. Out of the eleven pages in Melville's story four to five of them
discuss the journey that the character went on. Each of the character had to leave a love to be able to
go on their journey. Goodman Brown needed to leave his wife at home to be able to travel on the
dangerous road and Cupid needed to leave the Templar's in order to go on his journey to the factory.
Both of the authors had their own distinct style when writing their short stories, however there
were also a few styles that each author specifically used to his own advantage. Instead of just telling
the audience what was happening between characters, both authors included conversations between
characters that could be as little as a few words or a page in length. Both of the authors also use words
that show when the pieces were written. It is easy to see that the word choice in the stories are
