Five men against hundreds, in any situation, would seam as a sure lost. But when five particular men have a burning fire in their harts, noting can stand in their way. Their burning fire is a very common feeling that anyone can relate to. The extremely hard to resist desirer for revenge is that fire. The men refer to themselves as “The Regulators.” The leader of the men is a man named William but better know as Billy the Kid. Add horses and guns to all this and you have a classic movie called Young Guns. The film Young Guns is entirely about the notion that retaliation is a must, even when one is against all odds, these brave men fight to avenge a friend’s death. Revenge is a powerful thing. Young Guns gives countless examples where the need to get even over powers any reasonable thought processing. In the film there are many situation where the best thing to do is run, hide or surrender. Billy is a man that would never do anything of the sort. One can see this early in the film. During a scene, when the Regulators are eating dinner with their employer John Tunstall, Charlie and Steve are “hacking” on Billy. Billy is still new to the group. Dick states he has heard that Billy once killed a man. Charlie and Steve asked Billy why he killed that particular man. Billy answers “he was hacking on me.” This one statement says it all. Someone making fun of you is no reason to kill. Apparently to Billy it clearly is. There is no way to know certainly if Billy really did such a thing but even if he did not, he was sending a message to Charlie and Steve. The message was they should stop with their “hacking” or else. “Hacking” seems like a minor reason to kill a man but murdering one’s good friend seems like an almost justified reason. In the scene where John is gunned down by Murphy’s men the audience can witness this exact thing. Right after the shooting, Billy is ready for a good old fashion gun fight with the John’s killers.
