Young Scout’s search for Position
In To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee explored social inequality as seen through the eyes of young Scout, as She encounters the people’s different beliefs about social position of Maycomb County. Scout finds out why it’s acceptable for the Cunninghams not to have money in the town of Maycomb and why it’s ok for them to pay in packaged goods and deeds. Young scout finds the norms in social inequality of skin color, status quo of the family back ground and there economic status in Maycomb. Bob tries Tom in court for raping his daughter and Bob uses the bruises that Bob caused on his daughter as evidence that Tom raped Bobs’ daughter. Atticus Finch believes that such a horrible thing should never happen so he decided to be Tom Robinsons’ defense attorney. Many people are racist in Maycomb County and the community believes that Tom should be hung no matter the evidence because of this Atticus is considered to be socially unacceptable but, in his eyes he has not wronged anyone for he cannot live with the fact that Bob Ewell will continue this unjust satisfaction. Racism throughout reading this book is easily noted but at that time racism was a norm for society, thus Atticus thought that people are all equal is a social inequality. This kind of social inequality is very powerful because I will apply to every person in the community (black and white). Not only does the community believe blacks to be lower class but Atticus wants to ask, “Is it just; beating your daughter up because you don’t like black people?” This explains that Bob was afraid that he would lose whatever socially accepted position he had left in Maycomb and if he beat his daughter he would have been killed or brought down to a lower class than the blacks. Young Scout is the daughter of a lawyer on Maycomb who learns the opinions of the people of Maycomb. Young scout finds the norms in social inequality of skin color, status quo of the family back ground and there economic status in Maycomb. As she struggles to understand why Bob is and the rest of Maycomb is calling here a “nigger lover” (Lee) Atticus tries to explain to scout why people believe in different ideas and ways. Atticus ad t8jmvises Scout to “climb into their skin and feel what it’s like”. This helped scout see the social inequalities of skin color, family heritage, and the economic background. Atticus goes against everything that is considered socially acceptable by defending a black man.
