I can not say that I totally agree with the case. I do believe that this case shouldn 't have been thrown out and a thorough investigation of the bleachers should have been done. How many times has this happened? Do the school have monthly equipment checks, where they check and see what condition of their equipments including bleachers are in? What happened to Mrs. Boyer and her friends shouldn 't have happened if the school would have checked out the bleachers before the game started. The high school should at least pay for any injuries that were caused by their…
In Tuscaloosa, Alabama, The University of Alabama dismissed four freshmen football players. The players that were charged with either second-degree robbery or credit card fraud were defensive back Eddie Williams, 20, and linebackers Tyler Hayes and D.J. Pettway, both 18. They were shown the door after being charged with second-degree robbery for their involvement in the separate robberies students on the University of Alabama campus, Feb. 11. They were consequently expelled from campus while pending ruling from the Student Judicial Board. Redshirt freshman half back Brent Calloway was also dismissed after being charged with use of a stolen credit card taken from one of the students. It was the second run-in with the law for freshman Calloway.…
Football is a game of force and power, and the answer to problems on the field often is "Hit him harder" or “run faster.” Success is based on dominating the offensive and defensive lines and, if possible, not turning the ball over during the game. The U.S. Justice Department is looking into the BCS system. The DOJ wonders if it violates antitrust laws. It wonders why, when every other college sport has a playoff system, major college football does not.…
This time there was actual evidence and proof that he beat his girlfriend up. His girlfriend had bruises and scratches all over her body. Because of that the NFL suspended him for the first 10 game of the 2015 NFL season. it was then switched to the first 4 games of the NFL season. Why? I don't know why. The NFL is just trying to protect their players and make up for their cases. The big problem with the NFL is how they're handling this situation. They can be more involved and look at the pictures to decide that he should be suspended the whole year. Instead once again they just try to brush off the situation and act like once again everything is…
On the other hand, even though the NCAA is hypocritical and steps on their own feet with almost every rule and restriction they make, the rules are still rules. Because of this, none of these arguments can fully justify Manziel, as he was technically breaking the rules, and consequences are…
The 1919 Chicago “Black Sox” scandal is one of the biggest instances of sports deception in professional sports history. It was the one and only known time where members of a professional sports team had thrown the World Series because of bribery. It revolved around a major New York gangster named Arnold Rothstein, who supplied the money to all of the players that were involved in the throwing. One particular player out of the starting nine was “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, an all star and a future Hall of Famer. He was one of the first players in the court case who pleaded guilty for taking money to intentionally lose the 1919 Baseball World Series. After the court ruling, Jackson told reporters, “The jury could not have returned a fairer verdict, but I don't want to go back to organized baseball--I'm through with it.” This quote shows how he really felt about the entire situation and how sorry…
Obviously, the actions of one, or few can affect the masses. Consequently, Sandusky’s criminal and deplorable behavior not only affected his direct victims but permeating out directly negatively affecting the university and his immediate co-workers and supervisors. Unfortunately, his actions tainted what was one of the best college football programs in the nation and the reputation of an ivy league college. Not to take away from the immediate victims in the slightest, but some associates that should have been aware of…
One of the main characters, Smash, makes the correct decision to go on strike and returns at the correct time because of Coach Magill’s dehumanizing comments, the lack of a full-hearted apology, and the needs of Smashes African American teammates. In the beginning of the film, Coach Magill, when being interviewed after the team’s big win at states says that Smash and several of his other black teammates are “junk yard dogs”. The moment he compared black people to animals is where the conversation crossed the line. It is at this point in which the conversation with the reporters changes from lighthearted to racist. This comment is dehumanizing and it is completely understandable how the African American community at Dillon High School reacted.…
In 1987 the National Collegiate Athletic Association (N.C.A.A.) placed its harshest football punishment in history on Southern Methodist University (S.M.U.). The repeat violator rule, also known as the “death penalty,” banned the college from playing football for all of the 1987 and only allowed to play seven games in its 1988 season. They used S.M.U. as an example of what could happen when a college excessively violates N.C.A.A. regulations. The death penalty was the last option for the university because they were already on probation for past major violations with N.C.A.A. ("SMU Football Gets," 1987, p. 1C). The only thing left of S.M.U. after receiving ‘death’ was pick up the pieces and they are still trying to put the sport back together after so many years.…
9. Nicknamed the Brown Bomber, Louis helped elevate boxing from a nadir in popularity in the post-Jack Dempsey era by establishing a reputation as an honest, hardworking fighter at a time when the sport was dominated by gambling interests.…
When seeing the call on Bolden, Joe Stanton, quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, agreed this call was wrong. After the call he posted on Twitter giving his insight on the call. He said, “In all honesty, I feel horrible for Bolden right now. That is ridiculous to be taken out of the game your Senior year on a call like…
In the 144-page report, Jonathan Martin discussed how he was repeatedly harassed during his two years with the Dolphins. Football is a process where it is similar to bullying/hazing. For example, majority of fraternities and sororities go through this process with new candidates for crossing. Even though they don’t admit it, their process is to break a candidate down then build them back up in the process. Martin has to look at the situation as if he were a candidate as well. Yes his process was way longer than a fraternity, but it’s basically the same thing. I’m sure the candidates go through the same situations and maybe even worse.…
Upon the release of partial video footage of the assault the NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, banned Rice for two games without pay and fined him $58,000. Many felt that this punishment was insufficient and this message was continued to be reinforced through constant media coverage on the matter. This then led to Goodell revising the league’s policy on assault, battery, domestic violence and sexual assault, instituting a six-game suspension for NFL personnel who violate the policy once, and a lifetime ban for those who do so twice. Although the revision seemed like a step in the right direction, what was to follow was like fuel to the fire for the media.…
If you know football, you all redly know what I am going to talk about. I think he is the best running back in the NFL because he does not wait for a block he go throw the people that tries to tackle. I am writing an essay on Marwan lynch is the best running back in the NFL. I will tell you how much pro bowls super bowls and what teams he was on. In the essay. I will prove that he is the best running back in the NFL.…
The Milwaukee Court held, “the commissioner acted clearly within his authority” (Milwaukee 7). The Court found there was no definition of what constituted “detrimental conduct” and that this was by design, to keep out court rulings. The court states that the commissioner is granted “almost unlimited discretion in the determination of whether or not a certain state of facts creates a situation detrimental to [baseball]” (Milwaukee 6). The court does set out two limits on arbitrator (and commissioner) power; the decision cannot be arbitrary or induced by fraud (Milwaukee 6). If the Milwaukee Court were to decide the NFL Management Council case they would likely hold Commissioner Goodell acted within his authority because he has the authority to determine what conduct is detrimental to the league. Most likely the only way the Milwaukee Court would overturn Goodell’s ruling is if the ruling was fraudulent…
