The first passage uses a more direct writing style supported by concrete evidence and facts. Here, “The brushwood appears from a short distance as a leafless as our trees during winter; and it was some time before I discovered that not only almost every plant was now in full leaf, but that the greater number were in flower” (Lines 15 - 19), the author sounds more honest and straight-forward, describing exactly what he sees. The passage sounds more realistic rather than impractical, “A broken field of black basaltic lava, thrown into the most rugged waves and crossed by great... which shows little signs of life”. With the first piece the author gives off the impression that he is also telling a story, and with the constant usage of I, we receive a more personal experience. When reading this piece, one may feel as though they are sitting down and having a conversation with the author especially with the addition of personal pronouns, which makes his account seem more familiar, rather than a dry scientific report. However, even with the affect of the personal pronouns, the tone of this piece is still resembles that of a scientific journal when the author describes his surroundings. They are more analytical on landscape and habitat “Although I diligently tried to collect as many plants…
The Ocean of the Streams of Story symbolizes the human brain, this is where the "streams" and "currents" of ideas flow and originate. We don't just use our brain to store data, but we create and execute new ideas by using this compiled information: "unlike a library of books, the Ocean of the Streams of Story was much more than a storeroom of yarns. It was not dead but alive" (72)…
The ocean is a beautiful sanctuary not only for the animals that coexist within it, but also for people that spend more time in the water than on land. There are instances where the sea can represent a wide array of emotions such as respect, fear, and adventure. To me the ocean water is nothing less than a second home on the grounds that it reminds me so much of my home with emotions such as compatibility, fighting and peace coursing through the currents.…

These two books share a common theme. In the fiction resource The old man and the sea the theme is easily identified versus the nonfiction where you need to really listen into what they are saying. The theme they compare is when you are faced with a problem instead of giving up try to find a solution to the conflict. The old man only had a 12 foot skipper and the fish was a foot longer than the boat and the line could barely hold the fish's weight but he fought and eventually harpooned the fish.In the nonfiction resource the fish was wrapped in the line and they had to figure out a solution to bring in the fish without causing harm to the fish. Another theme leads that the technology does not matter just get the job done. Even though this theme…

Brave, patience, strong, proper, caring, generous, wonderful and beautiful, these are all the words that come to my mind when I think about my grandmother Ratna M. Ever since my parent left me when I was two years old, I have been living with my grandma until I turn 17 and every day I realize how intelligent she is and how much of a well-rounded woman she has made me become. My grandma Ratna had a big impact on my life and I wouldn't be the person I am today if it weren't for her. When I was younger, I didn't really like living with my grandma. I thought it was unfair that my parent left me with my grandma just to finish their business and school. As I got older, I realized that I didn't even know how well I was being treated and didn’t understand what my grandma had to offer. She has so many great stories from when she was growing up, stories about my grandpa whom left her when my youngest uncle was born. So, my grandmother was a single mother maintained a house of seven kids and she always has positive attitude. My grandmother fed the hungry, donated clothes, help people find jobs, and take care of kids. The whole village loved my grandmother dearly. She did not have many possessions, but she would give her all and never complain. She show’s me that it is not ok to give up on your dreams. No matter what anyone might tell me. So that has really impacted me on a high scale. Makes me stronger and try to get done what needs to be done to be able to reach those high expectations that I have for myself. And she is always right behind me, and she has my back through anything. And I don’t want her thinking that all her hard work has been a waste of time. So I really want to achieve my future goals, of becoming a kindergarten teacher so then she will know that everything she worked for was not all in vain. So then maybe I can help to take care of her so she will be happy for the rest of her life. That’s my main point for trying my hardest and…

My 92 year old grandmother has always been a great influence in my life. She used to take care of me when I was younger and she was still staying with my family. She has a kind, gentle smile which makes you want to talk to her when you see her. She speaks only Teochew but she can understand Chinese very well. As a form of respect, we try to converse with her in dialect. She is a very independent and strong willed lady as she always prepares her own food and does her own laundry. She never accepted any help from any others despite her old age.…
