was certainly not something we were use to. I can remember being taken away by the smell of food. One particular moment that stands out in my mind was tasting the roasted corn for the first time. Roasted corn was not a very common side dish in Cuba for me. I remember thinking it was the most delicious thing I had ever had to eat. The melted butter and the salt added to the deliciously roasted corn can still make my mouth water when I think about it. I can also remember trying the cotton candy and being blown away by not only the taste but the way it dissolved the moment it touched my mouth. As a child coming from a place like Cuba were nothing like this was familiar to us, I can honestly say it left a lasting impression on me. Before we even stepped foot inside the Fair, I remember feeling terrified just looking at the rides.
It was hard for me to imagine getting on one. All I can remember riding in my earlier years was the carousel with my mom and brother. I want to say we rode it at least 10 times the first time we went. As I got older, I progressed to the more intense rides, feeling less fearful for my life as I became more accustomed to going to the Youth Fair. My brother and I didn’t play any games the first few times we went because it was an extra cost that we weren’t able to afford. However, once we had a taste of some friendly competition, it became part of our annual experience. Yodi, my brother, was always able to beat me at most of the games. It wasn’t until I was in my late teens that I was finally able to give him a run for his money. Our favorite game was the punching speed bag that shows how strong you punch. I’ve been able to beat Yodi at times but we have never been able to punch harder than our father. The first time I went to the Dade County Youth Fair was an experience that I will never forget. When you ask me of a place that represents Miami, for me, especially as a child, the Youth Fair will always be the first thing to come to my mind. Coming from poverty in Cuba, it was magical to me. As an adult, I still go every year. Now, we go with my wife and kids. It has become a tradition for us and although we don’t usually ride the rides or play the games it is a pleasure to watch my kids enjoy what I enjoyed as a
kid.
