Youthful Tragedies
Youthful Tragedies The anthology, Sudden Flash Youth, edited by Christine Perkins-Hazuka, Tom Hazuka, and Mark Budman, has a lot of possibilities for a theme to cover all of the sixty-five different short stories. Tragedies in youth is one of the themes that stuck out. In “Currents” by Hannah Bottomy Voskuil, a young boy loses his brother and two girls become afraid of the water due to this horrific tragedy. Also, in this short story, it proves that tragedies in youth do not just affect the surrounding youth, but the adults as well. Another example would be “The Last Stop” by Jenny Halper. Even though tragedies in youth do not stand out as much in this short story as the others, this is a prime example that proves it best due to it taking place during a tragedy. When people think of tragedy, they automatically think of death or someone getting physically injured. This collection of short stories proves otherwise. Throughout the anthology, Sudden Flash Youth, the prominent theme is tragedies in youth with “Currents”, “Beyond Yesler”, “The Last Stop”, and “After” showing that the youth deals with tragedies in everyday life and sometimes they go unnoticed. “Currents”, proves that the prominent theme is tragedies in youth because even though the girls had no relation to the little boy before his accident, it still effected them. In this short story, the little boy is so terrorized that all he could say was “My brother” (Voskuil 29). This particular quote is youthful and tragic. It is youthful by the way the little boy told the lifeguard his brother was in trouble, but it is also tragic because the reader knows the little boy is implying that there is something wrong with his brother when he said, “my brother.” This short story was a simple one with a lot of emotion behind it. “Currents” proves that tragedies in youth do not just affect the youth, but the adults around as well. In the beginning of the story, the reader is introduced to this man named Gary. All

In an article written by Diane Dew, titled The Trouble Teens Face, It was stated that in recent years the media has been flooded with articles about the problems teens face. These problems range from drugs and violence, to pregnancy and abortion. I want discuss abortion because it is such an important issue for my generation. Since the 19th century English common law forbade abortion. Abortion prior to quickening was a misdemeanor and then a felony. In 1967 the first two states to make abortion legal was Colorado and California. By June 1970 New York passed its first abortion on demand law with a 24 week limit. It was the 16th state to allow abortion when the other states were still very restrictive. They only allowed abortions for pregnancies involving rape, incest, life of the mother or fetal handicap.…

Determining whether a juvenile is identified as a child or an adult is quite simple. If a juvenile is under the age of 18 then he or she is not an adult and if a juvenile has graduated from high school then he or she is identified as an adult. I believe that if a juvenile has not developed a certain level of intelligence or has not emotionally developed then they can’t be identified as an adult. In addition to that, although juveniles may have developed the sense of knowing right from wrong they may not know what’s right from wrong in the “adult world.” There have been laws passed to permitting juveniles to be transferred to adult court. The process with transferring juveniles to adult courts starts with the seriousness of the offense committed by the juvenile. If a juvenile has committed an offense such as armed robbery or murder then without a doubt there aren’t any excuses for…

“Children are not resilient, children are malleable.” Memories shape how we view and react to the world surrounding us. For no one is this more true, than children, as Dr. Bruce Perry, an internationally renowned psychiatrist, is quoted saying above. Children are born with no memories, malleable to those caring and interacting with them. Often, when faced with either incomprehensible, traumatic events or incomplete facts, they are forced to fill-in the blanks with their own imagination. A Mercy explores the minds of children who are forced to fill in those blanks, haunted by an inability to reconcile the real world with their warped perceptions of it. Eventually, through their own paths, often twisted and painful, they find inner peace.…
