When the clock struck 7:00 PM and the music began right on queue. With the help of Jacob Cook, Ruthanne Pursley, Edward Caruthers, and Michael Kagan, these teachers helped make students sing on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at the well known Youth Performing Arts school, with the first level being pretty filled. As the night went on many song played on throughout the night. The first song that played was Psaume 121 Je Leve Mes Yeux by Dann Manneke. I agreed with the song choice however, I felt like the placement was all wrong. The song was softer therefore should have been placed more towards the middle instead of the very beginning making it seem more boring. Next came Der Geist Hilft Unser Schwachheit auf by J.S Bach which slightly brightened my mood but still fell a little flat and didn't really stand out to me as much. More hope came when Messe de minuit pour Noel by Marc-Antoine Charpentier played. This song perked my ears back up and I enjoyed the slowness and calming effects of the song. Afterwards came Hodie Christus Natus Est by G P da Palestrina arr. This where the concert really started to pick up. Everyone's voices were layering pretty well and it all fit together. Next, Marvin Tundra by Ola Gjeilo and so did the composer's other song, Gloria played that night. These songs both gave me Goosebumps, which is a pretty good indicator you are listening to good music. The night finished up with some other pieces including, Ave Maria by Gustav Holst, and Betelehemu by Via Olatunji and Wendell Whalum. All of these were pretty equally enjoyable throughout the night. Overall, this concert wasn't bad at all. Just some minor rearrangement issues, but there is a very nice and exquisite palette of music and could give you some Goosebumps as well. Hopefully, the Youth Performing Arts School will continue on with the next concerts, with even more professionalism and great music.
