Dear mother, I am sorry it has been so long since I last wrote you, the war is getting intense. I can not wait to come home to Nova Scotia to see you, father, Thomas, and Elizabeth. How are they doing are they safe? War seems like it is getting even more dangerous due to the many warfare inventions, many soldiers die fighting at Western Front, never to go home and see their families again. It gets very lonely in the trenches, despite many soldiers being with me it feels like I am all alone, because you can never get too close to someone, when there is a good chance one of you will die here in the violent, decaying and dugusting time called war. Ypres was the last major town that us Allies held and we did not want to give that up because that would indicate our defeat. Ypres also had French ports on the English Channel that would help in the transportation of weapons and materials. During this battle Germans released chlorine gas on the French many died because we were not prepared for that type of warfare, because it was the first time poisonous gas was used in war. Most of this gas did not reach us, thank god, so we took this advantage and fought back against the Germans until British troops arrived.
