Ben Hall and Maguire may have divided the property and operated independently of each other, as in John McGuire's narrative, 'The Biography of a Reliable Old Native', Maguire states that Ben Hall reputedly named his portion 'Cubbine Bin', running his own cattle and horses, and when required the two men worked together in clearing and forming stockyards close to their water supply, this would have been a prudent way to operate a new farming enterprise in the 1860’s, and thus the two squatters shared the yearly rent to the government, as for the acquiring of stock for this new enterprise, John Maguire states that Ben Hall and himself had done a bit of duffing, Maguire…
In “The South,” Borges establishes ambiguity by dropping subtle textual hints that would ultimately allow for the reader to attain vastly different interpretations of the same text. If taken at face value, the main character Dahlmann is released from a sanatorium after a serious head injury. On the train ride back from the sanatorium, Borges hints that Dahlmann periodically transitions into his illusory past of the old South. Even as he enters the cab that would take him to the train station, he admits that “reality is partial to symmetries and slight anachronism” (175) meaning that his past, although misplaced and irrelevant to modern times, continues to have significance in the present. The reader can argue that Dahlmann’s nostalgia induces illusions of the world from a time he remembered and celebrated it. On the train ride back to his ranch, he describes that the car “was not the same car that had pulled out of the station… the plains and the hours had penetrated and transfigured it” (177) and that Dahlmann “was traveling not only into the South but into the past ” (177). Borges uses this description to indicate that Dahlmann transcends into his fantasies of the old South on the train ride home as a result of a longing for the past.…
Considering Shen Congwen’s short story “The Inn”, it is worth saying that the title itself has much in common with romantic dimensions. However, at the beginning of “The Inn” one cannot help but become aware that fin de siècle images as well as emotions appeared to prevail over the other constituents of the story’s setting; the focus here lies in arguing that the inn appears to be placed at the foot of a range of hills close to the town frontiers. Each day, the exhausted people, being involved in walking “a distance of eighty or a hundred miles” (Congwen 107), would approach the house and seek for the bed. Subsequently, they would fall asleep similar to the logs on a straw, with their bodies deprived…

The excursion of the first year of the art history bachelor always goes to Paris. At first I wasn't happy that I was placed in the parks and gardens group, until of course I thought about Versailles! We had a whole day to visit Versailles and we needed it. We walked so much that I was literally limping at the end of the day. I guess sometimes you have to make sacrifices to see beautiful things.…
Li-Young Lee’s poem “A Story” shows the complicated relationship between the father and the son by utilizing the literary devices of point of view and structure. Italicized lines distinguish the diction of who is talking to draw on point of view to indicate the complex relationship. Through changing perspective, Lee employs emotional interests to emphasize the conflicting perspectives that exist between father and son. Lee also adds depth to the shared “love” between the two characters to illuminate the theme of innocence and changing relationships over the course of time.…
The narrator of the novel, Jim Burden, relies heavily on the past. This can be seen many times in…
Most would agree that democracy is one of the best political assets a country can offer. Fortunately, the United States’ government is based off of democracy. In a democracy citizens are allowed to vote on the decisions that the government makes. However, that is not the case for many other countries. China, for example, is a communist country. The choices the communist government makes rely more on the decisions that the government officials make rather than the choices of the citizens. Communism has sparked plenty of controversy in China. Many citizens are opposed to communism and have protested for a chance at…

It is important to notice that, for Rowlandson, her faith is a very important part as a Puritan woman, but also as the daughter and wife of Puritan’s reverends. The Puritan colonies went through several struggles in those years due to the Indian’s attacks and the faith of the community on the bible helps them to survive and fight for these lands. In several points of her narration, Rowlandson “interpreted her capture and the eleven weeks spent as captive, through a religious lens.” (Andrews, 9) This religious perspective of the events is a clear connection for someone as well-read and educated in Puritanism as Mary because “captivity, in the Old Testament, is viewed as a means of both instruction (and spiritual testing) and correction (or punishment)”…
Puritan beliefs are filled with paradoxes. The Puritan people came to America and rebelled against society in order to create a perfect world for themselves, a bubble of their own that was to be free of rebellion. The puritan people were supposed to seek salvation, but they were helpless against the evils that were sent their way.. They were supposed to hope and pray for eternal refuge in God’s Kingdom, and yet they believe that God had predetermined their fate for them. These paradoxical Puritan patterns of thought may be what caused Mary Rowlandson to portray an inconsistent view of her Native captors in her Narrative.…
Life is full of various events and experiences, but not all of them are equally important, enjoyable and memorable. There are a few of those special days which remain evergreen in my heart and that I can remember of. Some events have changed me for better and made me stronger, while others are just there to remember and smile because they have happened at one point in my life. The fact of me coming to America for the first time is such an event.…
