Assignment title: Development of Modern Transport Aircraft
Introduction
In 1952 the Boeing Company of Everett, Washington, aided by their B-47 and B-52 programmes, began development work on their entry into the burgeoning market place of commercial passenger jet transport. This aircraft, eventually known as the Boeing 707, went on to revolutionise national and intercontinental air travel by using new and innovative technology.
Boeing has continued this tradition of innovative technology and design, when on 25 September 2011, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner entered airline service, bringing with it the capability to carry up to 242 fare paying passengers for distances of up to 8,200 nautical miles. In comparison, when the 707 entered service in 1958, it could carry 141 passengers up to 4,000 miles. An extraordinary difference! The key innovations that have brought about this advance in air travel include:
Composite material construction
High aspect ratio wing and advanced flight control systems
Hi-bypass ratio and fuel efficient engines
Computer Aided Design
Composite material construction
Composite materials, for example carbon fibre reinforced polymers , which by nature have a higher strength to weight ratio than aluminium alloys, have been used extensively throughout the 787’s revolutionary design; up to 50% by weight of the primary structure.
This has resulted in many benefits to the 787 design, apart from the massive weight saving. The fuselage outer surface is now smooth and of uniform shape thanks to the one piece fuselage construction and the elimination of aluminium sheets, lap joints and fastener heads; which contribute the overall weight reduction (20% in comparison to aluminium aircraft), improved
