Scudder, one of the nation's first investment counseling firms, founded in 1919 by Theodore Scudder, Haven Clark, and Sydney Stevens, had performed a successful development until 1993. Especially in 1980s and the beginning of 1990s its mutual fund business was one of the fastest growing mutual fund families in terms of growing account numbers, asset size, and revenues. Meanwhile, thanks to corporate pension plan sponsors directing their funds to large sophisticated and diversified money management firms, its institutional business was also growing. Scudder's mutual fund business was the first to introduce international mutual fund and no-load mutual funds in the U.S. in 1970s. The firm's investment counseling business was executed by geographically separate offices (Boston, New York Philadelphia, Dallas etc.). In the course of time, some of these district offices became specialized teams on the investment side of the business (for example, equity research analysts and portfolio managers in New York office, fixed income specialists in Boston office). Parallel to its domestic growth, the firm's international branches had been opened and international instruments offered had been increased in numbers. In 1980s, with the expansion in the organization structure and the increase in the instruments offered, the firm had improved both its database and service technology; furthermore the firm's organizational structure was changed from partnership form to corporate form. Its service policy was based on direct marketing. Its basic concern in providing its services was to deliver quality investment services and to add value for its clients and therefore, their investment portfolios were composed investment instruments with relatively low risk and moderate return.…

MF Global was founded in the late 1700’s by James Man. It was a pure cash commodities firm that dealt mostly with the trade of sugar and molasses. ED&F Man, as it was known when it was founded up until the late 2000’s, mainly traded pure cash commodities until the late 1970’s. They then started to trade futures and other securities as futures market became more mechanized with the use of the internet. This made for a time of great growth and expansion and in 1994 they listed on the London stock exchange with a total of 650 employees. They acquired offices in Tokyo, Australia, the United States, and London. They remained this way as ED&F Man until 2007 when the company split into two firms. National Mutual Funds (NMF), founded in the 1940s, is one of the most important mutual fund companies in the brokerage industry in the United States. The company has extended from a mutual fund company to a financial center offering mutual funds, brokerage products including stocks and bonds, insurance products, and a variety of planning tools to help customers save for major life needs. However, since the market downturn, which is hurting many brokerage and mutual fund houses, NMF’s profits and operations have been affected significantly. To respond to the market slowdown, Harry Smallwood, President of NMF Retail Services, has come up with a directive to reorganize the call centers in the Retail Services Division in an effort to grow its asset base.…

Abstract— We describe the design, fabrication, and calibration of a highly compliant artificial skin sensor. The sensor consists of multilayered mircochannels in an elastomer matrix filled with a conductive liquid, capable of detecting multiaxis strains and contact pressure. A novel manufacturing method comprised of layered molding and casting processes is demonstrated to fabricate the multilayered soft sensor circuit. Silicone rubber layers with channel patterns, cast with 3-D printed molds, are bonded to create embedded microchannels, and a conductive liquid is injected into the microchannels. The channel dimensions are 200 µm (width) × 300 µm (height). The size of the sensor is 25 mm × 25 mm, and the thickness is approximately 3.5 mm. The prototype is tested with a materials tester and showed linearity in strain sensing and nonlinearity in pressure sensing. The sensor signal is repeatable in both cases. The characteristic modulus of the skin prototype is approximately 63 kPa. The sensor is functional up to strains of approximately 250%. Index Terms— Artificial skin, eutectic gallium indium (EGaIn), pressure sensing, soft sensors, strain sensing.…

Gauri Deshpande’s poetry deals mostly with everyday life and she writes often to release the tensions which keep building in her and demand utterance, the experience being “transmitted in terms of imagery, rhythm and nuances of words”. In the words of C.P. Singh her poems “show an artist in making, a struggling towards the happy blending between deep experiences and a congruent poetic form that makes a gem of art out of the raw metal of personal life” (“Between Desire and Vision: A Study in the Poetry of Gauri Deshpande” in Indian Poetry in English Ed. Hari Mohan Prasad, p.223) Her Indian Treescape is a typical illus¬tration of her attempt to present a subject matter which is totally Indian in a language which is both rhetorical and evocative show¬ing an acute sensitivity to the colours and shades as well as the sounds of nature.…
