Not long after the storm wrecked the city of New Orleans, Zeitoun sprung into action. He felt "invigorated," and decided that he "had never felt such purpose." Zeitoun wanted to continue helping people in need. Over the course of the next few days, Zeitoun fed a group of abandoned dogs, gave people rides through the flooded streets on his canoe, and much more. Everything was going great for Zeitoun until a group of soldiers captured him outside of his home. The soldiers thought that Zeitoun was a terrorist, arresting him on sight. Zeitoun was detained in several prisons until Kathy was able to locate him and secure his release many months

When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005 the Zeitoun family could not decide on whether or not to flee or to stay in the city. In the end, Abdulrahman, more commonly known as Zeitoun, stayed behind and Kathy took the children to visit her family in Baton Rouge. What was his justification to stay behind? What happened in his past that gave him the faith to remain during the storm? The book, Zeitoun, answer many of these questions through anecdotes. Dave Eggers uses anachronistic anecdotes to develop characters throughout the story. These stories help describe individual character backgrounds, highlight character traits that will become important later and show the healing process after the storm.…

They are held in a crowded, miserable outdoor prison, where they are subjected to brutality by the guards. To make matters worse, Muslims Zeitoun and Nasser cannot eat most of the food they are given, as it includes pork.Eventually, the men are transferred to Hunt Correctional Facility - still without being properly charged. Although the conditions here are marginally better, Zeitoun is still not allowed to call Kathy, and he begins to despair that he will ever be released. Zeitoun suffers undiagnosed pain and loses weight rapidly. He believes that hubris and pride are responsible; by not heeding Kathy 's warnings, he has placed himself in this predicament. He appeals to a sympathetic missionary to call Kathy on his behalf, and he reluctantly agrees although it is against the rules. The next day, Zeitoun is interviewed by the Department of Homeland Security. Their agents are relatively friendly and also agree to call Kathy. After learning Zeitoun’s location, Kathy is able to post bail using their office building as collateral. Soon after, the charges against him are dropped. After his release, the family sets about gutting and rebuilding their home in New Orleans. They continue to have problems with the bureaucracy of FEMA and the legal system. FEMA offers them a free trailer to live in but does not give them a key, and then refuses to take it away from the Zeitouns’ property when it is no longer necessary. They file a lawsuit demanding compensation for Zeitoun’s incarceration, but it had not progressed much by 2008, when Zeitoun was written. Both Zeitoun and Kathy continue to suffer symptoms of post-traumatic stress, but they persevere and refuse to leave New Orleans. Zeitoun takes great satisfaction from rebuilding both the city (through his contracting business) and his life (through his family).…

His time in prison shows him reflecting on the good he'd done, as well as praying for a better situation, but I do not recall one time at which he says to himself that he definitely should have left New Orleans. Did he not expect at all that in all the paranoia of a critical hurricane in a post-9/11 society that a Middle Eastern Muslim man would be a target for bigotry and used as a scapegoat? Although, his imprisonment was completely unwarranted, along with the charges brought against him and accusations made against him, nothing should have been a surprise to Zeitoun. Zeitoun was either unequipped with the knowledge that this country's ideals of justice are far from perfect and that the executive branch of our government is very prone to quick, harsh decisions and quick, definitive judgments… or just not very thoughtful. The results of Zeitoun's poor decision to stay in New Orleans stuck to Kathy for the rest of what we read of her life in Zeitoun. Kathy's mental healthy was sacrificed all because Zeitoun foolishly remained in the city, with knowledge that a particularly dangerous storm was…

In the book, the way Zeitoun’s relationship with Kathy and his family seemed like such a loving and compassionate relationship. It almost seems false that a relationship that loving could end up in a murder plot. In the book when Hurricane Katrina was hitting New Orleans there were many strong undertones on how much Zeitoun missed his family and it almost seemed like Zeitoun wasn’t as concerned with the storm as much as he wanted to be in contact with his family. Kathy seemed just as concerned and she ended up becoming hysterical at times when she couldn’t figure out where he was. At one point in the book Kathy was willing to drive from Arizona back to New Orleans just to have hope that she could see her husband again. It seemed like a genuine relationship before all the chaos which leads me to think that Zeitoun might be suffering from something PTSD related.…

Zeitoun’s test might be considered by some to be extreme. Sitting in a cage in Louisiana behind a bus station is not an experience most people would wish upon themselves. A test like this does one of two things to your faith, either it destroys it, or it sets it into stone. Allah was testing Zeitoun in such an extreme way because it takes more hardship than normal to bring a strong follower of the faith: such as Zeitoun, to his or her breaking point. A follower who is not as faithful as Zeitoun, very well may have broken down and renounced his or her faith. However, this was not the case for him because of his unwavering…

Zeitoun was a hero. In Zeitoun, author Dave Eggers narrates the story of Abdulrahman Zeitoun the Syrian-American owner of a painting and contracting company in New Orleans, Louisiana who chose to ride out Hurricane Katrina in his Uptown home. However, in 2005 Katrina was a hurricane no one was prepared for and, for those who lived in Louisiana, New Orleans, it was nothing short of a disaster. Many residents left their homes in search of shelter from the approaching hurricane. In Dave Egger’s New York Times best seller, Zeitoun, he writes about a Muslim man named Abdulrahman Zeitoun who stays behind during Hurricane Katrina and canoes around to help people that are trapped in their house and helps them get to safety and he feeds helpless dogs that are starving. Zeitoun is portrayed as a heroic family figure in the book. He is a kind man and acted selflessly whenever he had to do things. For example, he gave the limited food that he had to save the starving dogs and each day he went back. However in 2012, the world was shocked to find that Abdulrahman Zeitoun was convicted of domestic violence and other hateful crimes. There is now a big controversy at Mills High School, and teachers are debating whether or not students…
