Palm oil milling have been targeting for zero emission for a long period. With extracting crude palm oil (CPO) from fruit bunch is still can be consider at low cost technology, emission control at palm oil can be consider at a right track with more and more advance technology have been introduce to control and ultimately meeting the zero emission target.
As to meet with Kyoto Protocol 1997 and Carbon Credit Programme by United Nation
Framework for Carbon Control Convention (UNFCCC), initiatives to control emissions especially in Malaysia have been implemented with Malaysian government trough Malaysian
Palm Oil Board (MPOB) have include such initiatives in the new Economic Transformation
Plan.
Source of emission in palm oil mill was coming on various point and Palm Oil Mill Effluent
(POME) is just not one of it. Others sources can be include are fuel from transportation and mechanical equipments that available at palm oil mill. Exhaust gases from boiler stack and dust also can be part landfill for decomposing fruit bunch products can introduce to other such as dust and sludge.
Introduction of Zero Waste Zero Discharge Initiatives at palm oil mill can achieve such zero emission target. With this initiatives, implementation of various units or plants to control the emission can applied. Units or plants such as biogas plant, polishing/tertiary plant, evaporation plant and composing plant can ensure the target of zero emission are met.
Zero Waste Zero Discharge Initiatives at Palm Oil Mill
This initiatives not only enable zero emission but at the same time can reduce the operating cost of the mill with biogas plant that generate its own power supply that can be use back by the mill and also introduce the power into national power
