The Stanford Prison Experiment
Give a basic (introductory only) overview of the study and what occurred
• Professor Zimbardio sought to investigate how situational variables impact human behaviour, the Stanford Prison Experiment focuses on the roles of ‘guard’ or ‘prisoner’.
• During the experiment the guards became increasingly abusive, and the prisoners began to show signs of extreme stress and anxiety.
• Even professor Zimbardo exhibited the mindset of a prison warden in the experiment.

In these occasions, when it is necessary for scientific reasons to conduct a study without fully informing participants of the true purpose of the study prior to the commencement, the researcher must ensure that participants do not suffer distress from the research procedures. In all cases involving deception, participants must be immediately debriefed at the conclusion of the study.
Informed consent procedures
When possible researchers must appropriately inform participants, the type of study and the reasons for the research before agreeing to participate in the experiment. When the nature of research procedures involves activities that produce physical or mental stress, the researcher must inform the participants of the research procedures used and the physical or psychological effects that should be expected. If unexpectedly, potentially harmful stress occurs, the researcher must immediately end the participant’s involvement in the study and make sure that the participants reactions are treated.
