Humans have been interested in stars and constellations for as long as we’ve been on earth.
Stargazing was seen as a form of entertainment before we had TV, cell phones, or even books to read, but it is the Babylonians who are credited with the birth of astrology. Early on, they were following star patterns to predict seasons. Babylonian studies were eventually introduced to the Greeks around fourth century BCE. Astronomers such as Plato or Aristotle took the studies in as science. As it spread to other societies such as the Romans it was used mostly for prediction purposes. The predictions spread beyond weather forecasts and the constellations began to foresee natural disasters and
war. Furthermore, the word: “zodiac” derived from the Greek, but the Babylonians were the first to identify the twelve constellations. The twelve constellations are based on the earth’s yearly rotation around the sun. The Babylonians based the original “zodiac signs” on the five planets they knew at the time and the sun and moon. The Babylonians believed the planets all had special powers and specific associations. For example, they believed mars was affiliated with aggression and war.
To continue, I don’t know about you but I was confused about was how astrology started as weather forecasts and is currently a section is a weekly magazine saying things such as “go with the flow” or “follow your instincts”. The credit for the first newspaper horoscope column goes to R.H. Naylor, a 20th century British astrologer who wrote an article that predicted the life events of the newly born princess, Margaret. He followed the stars at the exact time the princess was born to make his predictions. His predictions were unbelievably precise and accurate and gained a large amount of attention. He talked about her love life and forthcoming problems with alcohol. After his popularity from the Princess’s horoscope, Naylor was asked to write more fortunes. Again, his forecasts were definite. Soon, he began writing a column in a newspaper, giving advice for people whose birthdays fell on that week. He started the concept of “sun signs”, which our the zodiac signs we know today. After that, astrology as we know now was born. Its popularity has remained relatively consistent over the years. Recently, the American Federation of Astrologers states that 23% of the American population still read their horoscopes every day.
