A Bad Experience and What I Learned From It

When my dad asked if I wanted to participate in a recital contest, which was citywide, I agreed without hesitation.
I was a proud peacock thinking that it was impossible for me not to win, so I neglected practicing. But when I turned on the microphone, I was faced with a problem: What was the stunning opening line that I used to start speeches with? I was too arrogant to start with the common “Good morning, ladies and gentlemen,” when I really couldn’t think of anything else. So there I stood, face ashen, eyes wide, holding on to the last hope that the lines would pop up. They didn’t, and the bell rang. I walked miserably off stage, trying hard not to trip to retain what little dignity I had left. The audience was quiet, and I was not used to it. Well goes the say,” No pain, no gain.” Were it not for the loss, I wouldn’t know the importance and essentiality of previous drills and being humble. Since then, I always make sure I practice till the last minute for anything that is to come.

Screwing up the easiest drill. So you managed to get through practice so far, but your nerves have gotten to you and now you screwed up the easiest drill that was ever invented. The drill is where you literally get passed to and shoot the puck. It's not too easy when you don’t know how to catch a pass.…

Once the time came to decide on who would conduct the finale, the choice was clear. The director saw my potential and inclination to achieve greatness during our rehearsals and chose me over many other talented individuals. Over the course of the next two months, I alone spearheaded every rehearsal, often spending hours a day in the band room providing both artistic and technical instruction to an ensemble of roughly 140 members. It was not until then that I had realized how difficult it was to convey artistic choices to such a large group of students effectively, but I eventually overcame the many obstacles that my lack of experience presented and skillfully conducted the finale at our concert. The piece received a standing ovation from the audience, but more importantly, a profound emotional response from many members of the audience that manifested as both tears and elated shouts. My director commented that it was the most efficient and successful finale piece he had ever seen. Similarly, I recently placed first in a district-wide audition between all the high school tenor saxophonists across multiple cities for entrance into a symphonic band. Unlike almost all musicians of my caliber, I have not had to rely on private lessons from professional…

I truthfully could not fathom how this had occurred. I, who had never lost at anything, who lived for competition, who thrived on success, had lost miserably at my first ever meet. I walked onto the bus mortified and unable to meet any of my teammates' eyes all the while contemplating what it was I did wrong, or…

Four years ago, I first entered Garth Webb; it seems like it has been just been just yesterday I wheeled into the school—did you guys get taller or is just me? I have thought long and hard about my journey and what I ought to say to you guys and while writing this I realized I still hate public speaking even more so this should be interesting, thanks Mrs. McLeod. I gotta be honest and say that I was pretty nervous about giving a speech; I kept thinking: What if I was like Taylor Swift and someone came up and interrupted like Kanye did back in 2009 but instead they said “Sorry I'm gonna let you finish but someone else…

I remember when i started. My first practice was horrible. Later that night my mother told me that even if you don't succeed at first just give it time and practice and eventually you will thrive. The following year I went out for the team again and practiced each day, giving it my all remembering how to control my breathing and when to push through the pain. As the cross country season went on and improved my time, and running form, determined to succeed in the future. I have always been a believer in hard work, and I find the harder I work, the more determined I'm to succeed. My last three years of running I made the district team and became a medalist of central Massachusetts as well as a divisional medalist. Views on practice may differ but it does not make you better, it's the attitude and mentality you put into your practice that truly makes a runner flourish. In brief life throws all sorts of challenges in your way not just in sports but in everyday activities. However success is not final it's a water station to refuel your mind and continue on life's journey, failure is not the end, it's just a horrible race, but the will to practice on after an awful race is what…

Then, next practice we basically ran all practice because that guy got the ball every time. So we ran suicides and sprints the whole time at practice and if it happened again we would run more. So that never happened again because no one liked running all practice. So now the next game we faced shamrocks and came real close to beating…

After my father passed away, I did not really have anyone to practice with at home. I was extremely nervous despite the fact that everyone had told me I was going to make varsity since I had done so well at camp. There were about 23 people trying out for varsity and only 18 could make it and so I had a good chance at making the team but that still did not calm my nerves. Before we went out to the brand new turf field for tryouts I was psyching myself out and was doubting myself in all ways possible. My hands were shaking, I was sweating, all while listening to the calm chatter of everyone else echoing loudly in the locker room. “You can’t make varsity; the others are just too good” I was telling myself. During tryouts the pace was fast, the humidity was high, and our spirits were just as high. We had to do lots of ball work and ball skills on the first day and I was messing up completely at times. At one point I screamed out in utter anger because I just could not get my feet to do the correct things. I was so angry with myself because I knew I could do better than what I had done that day. I went home feeling utterly defeated but ready for the next day because there were two days of tryouts. The next day I felt absolutely great and I was doing everything right! I was passing every drill while receiving complements from my coaches. I felt great and as I was walking up the big, blue steps to the locker room, I knew that I had done great at…

Brilliant Public Speaking was a very informational video. I enjoyed hearing from each and every person in the video. Each person brought something new to the table and gave their view of public speaking. The one thing that stood out of my mind the most is how each and every one of them said to make the speech personal. One person said that facts are true, but stories sell. In other words make the speech something they want to hear. Don’t bore them by constantly repeating the same thing and staying the same tone. This video tied in well with this week’s topic because it shows how effectively to communicate when giving a speech in the workplace.…

One lesson I learned, and arguably one of the most important lessons I ever learned is that no one can ever fault you for trying, for giving effort. When I found out I was the third stringer I had no clue what my future held or what was the next step for me. I couldn’t really think of any other option than to try my hardest at every opportunity that presented itself. I would take the small amount reps I got at practice and made the most of them. I would do extra footwork drills in the time that was given for us to rest. I watched films until the point that I thought my computer would over heat. I did these things because I realized at the time, that no matter how my future turned out, all anybody could ever ask for is effort. I knew that if I gave it everything I got, regardless whether I earned a starting spot or never played a down of football in my high school career, that my friends would respect…
