In the film "A Beautiful Mind",the main character John Nash is a brilliant Mathematician who suffers over many of years with a serious psychotic disorder called schizophrenia. John has many hallucinations and delusions throughout much of his adult life. These hallucinations include two sided conversations with imaginary people, that in his mind are really there, yet nobody else can see them.
The type of schizophrenia John has falls in to a paranoid schizophrenic category. John specifically believes Charles Herman and William Parcer; two of the characters of his overly- active imagination are part of a Communist. Charles and William are believed to have sent John on various missions as a Government Spy to complete. If John wasn’t to comply he believed there were to harm him and those that he loved.
Over time his paranoia along with his illusions completely took over John’s mind. John was completely living out of reality almost as if he was actually living a dream. Running out on a conference being held at Harvard University because he felt Charles and William were after him, when it happened to actually be a Psychiatrist and his team. The Psychiatrist and his team were there to admit John to a Psychiatric Hospital for the first time of many to come. John, thinking it was Charles and Willam’s team resisted for his life in the middle of a delusion actually harming the Dr.
With his erratic behavior the team subdued John and administered him with an insulin syringe to calm him quickly. John was then admitted to the hospital where he would have a harsh reality check. While in the hospital he would be put in restraints while having a psychotic episode, and given a series of insulin shots and also electric shock treatments 5 times a week for 10 weeks. John was released from the hospital a short time later and with proper antipsychotic medication started to gain control of his reality.
One Year later John believed he was healed as he had been
