A Birthday
Christina Rossetti's poem "A Birthday" and Kate Chopin's short story "The Story of an Hour" present conflicting attitudes toward love. In particular the speaker in Rossetti's poem is anticipating and overjoyed by the arrival of her new found love, whereas the character in Chopin's story, after the initial shock of her new found freedom , was overjoyed by the loss of her love. In the poem and short story several literary elements and techniques were used to convey these different attitudes toward love.

A simile is comparison with one thing described as if it were another, using the words "like" or "as". In the poem similes are used to portray the joy of the speaker. Example of the joy of the speaker are found in the liens "My heart is like a singing bird", and "My heart is like a rainbow shell". In the story a simile is used in expressing the initial shock of the character. The words describing the characters shock are "a sob came up into her throat and shook her, as a child who has cried itself to sleep continues to sob

in it's dreams".

Symbolism is the use of an object which represents itself and something beyond itself. A tree is a symbol used in both selections to convey there attitude towards love. In the poem the line "My heart is like an apple tree whose boughs are bent with thickset fruit" shows the happiness of the speaker and the fullness of her heart do to her new love.

In the line "She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all quivering with the new spring life" The symbol of the tree is used to convey a different attitude towards love. It shows the excitement of the character for her rebirth and freedom obtained by the loss of her love.

A character is a fugue who takes part in the action of a literary work. In the two selections the authors use two very different characters in conveying there different attitudes on love. In the poem the character is a young woman

In the book Ice Drift, an example of figurative language is “His ears were small, like those of most other Arctic animals, offering less area to absorb the cold of forty-five degrees below zero.” In that sentence on page 5 and chapter one the author uses a simile. I know that's a simile because it uses “like” to describe the dog, Jamka to Arctic animals. This simile lets us, the reader clearly visualize Jamkaś ears. And I know what Arctic animals ears looks like but not necessarily Jamkaś ears. Why I said that is because in the definition of simile in our notes says “A comparison of two unlike I things using like or as” I think the author used a simile in this spot, because he wanted to give his audience a good visual of Jamka the dog.…

In Zora Neal Hurston’s novel, Janie Crawford is absolutely fascinated with nature and Hurston uses symbols such as the pear tree, the horizon, and the hurricane to represent a large part in Janie’s life. The peach tree is a symbol representing Janie in the story, because it represents Janie’s idealism of nature and her interest in it. She absolutely loves this pear tree and she goes to this tree as a place to get away from everything going on in her life, and she finds and tranquility here. For example, Janie explains how she feels when she goes to this place, “Ah wants things sweet wid mah marriage lak when you sit under a pear tree and think. Ah...”(Hurston, 23). She sees how the bees interact with the pear tree plants and sees how perfect nature can be and she want to find that harmony with nature. The horizon would be considered a symbol in the novel because it represents Janie’s longing to understand with the mystery of the far-off world and harmony of nature. Hurston…

Not only do these trees symbolize the people in the story, they symbolize how the trees and the Great Men of the Colony are rotting from the inside out. When one of these trees is getting cut down, the person is slowly dying, and then when the tree falls they automatically fall dead as well. These trees act as a gravestone because of the names carved on them, and how they are scattered throughout like a graveyard. The fact that these trees are dark and gloomy also helps you think of a gravestone in a graveyard.…

I think that the tree branches merging relates to Hope's life because she had to leave her old friends but she ended up making new ones. She also did not know her father and did not have her mother with her, but Addie and G.T. became a big part of her life and became very important. The short stories called Desiree’s Baby by Kate Chopin and The Lady with the Pet Dog by Anton Chekhov both contain the theme of love but it is told in different ways for each short stories. As deep as both stories go, it is possible to see that the each author wrote about love but in opposite ways. Although the short stories show resemblances as far as how the men’s love for their lady make them dictate the tone of the relationship, it is evident that Anton Chekhov wants to show how love can suddenly appear while Kate Chopin tries to demonstrate how love may instantly disappear.…

Symbolism is a literary term used ought to often. Sometimes it is not even necessary in a wide variety of its uses. Yet in some stories, it is all the readers have to go off of and his extremely vital. In “The Flowers” and “Chrysanthemums” the authors so seamlessly insert one or two examples of symbolism into the text, so the instances were obvious enough to the readers but delicately placed therefore they were not obnoxious. The two short stories are slightly similar since both of their symbols are regarding flowers, yet they have completely different meanings. One a meaning of understandance and the other a meaning of strength. The symbols coincided directly with the characters and basically were the most prominent element in characterizing…

This gives the reader information about Benedick lifestyle by comparing him to a bachelor. This form of simile is explicit because it indicates what characteristic of Benedick and a bachelor are being shared. Hard To Find Symbolism

Symbolism was found many times throughout the story. The first time I came around symbolism was when the family was talking about Toomsboro. Toomsboro sounds a lot like tomb so that symbolizes the eventual fate the family will soon meet. The next symbolism I found was when The Misfit’s car was going down the road towards the disoriented family. The car was described as “big black battered hearse-like automobile (145).” The reason that this is symbolism is because a hearse is what carries coffins to funerals. The Misfit’s car represents the intimate death that the family will soon meet. Lastly, the final symbolism is the cloudless, sunless sky. Most people would think that a day with no clouds would be a beautiful, happy day filled with fun; however, this family in the story thought that but it turned out to be their worst day. Usually when a murder takes place it happens at night when it is dark and no one is around. This murder happened on a beautiful day, but the main reason I brought up this is because when The Misfit shot the Grandmother, she feel back looking up towards the beautiful sky with a smile on her face. This symbol represents that the Grandmother found inner peace with herself.…

In literature, a symbol is an object that has the potential to represent something that is not manifested in the reading. Readers may comprehend something differently about what they are reading than what the symbols are actually revealing in the book. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel, The Scarlet Letter, is significantly symbolic. In this book, the forest is a substantial symbol due to the fact that there are many different viewpoints of what the wilderness represents throughout the story. The forest portrays a place of sin and darkness, a safe place that provides privacy for Hester and Dimmesdale, and eventually progresses into a place of freedom.…

Morrison uses the elements of symbolism and metaphor to create a powerful depiction of emotions. The imagery of beautiful trees in Beloved attempts to mask the horrors that took place among them. Ironically ,beautiful Trees are perverted into a symbol of horrible acts. The characters of Beloved were faced in a time period where they have been oppressed to the point of dehumanization and subjected to the idea of companionism of inanimate objects (trees, in this case). Morrison crafts the novel around the idea of trees, how we see them today, and what they meant to people who witnessed the evil in other aspects of their life. It seems as if the characters' interpretation of what trees are gives the reader insight to fully analyzing a character. The characters' responses to trees give the reader insight to how, through horrific experiences , one can still find serenity within nature and trees, usually the only beautiful things when living life as a slave. Toni Morrison does an excellent job of piecing slavery hardened characters together that are ultimately formed by one element. The trees are there as a symbol of not only life, but death, and all the bad in between. The perception of this novel is totally up to the reader and interpretation is key to analyzing the element of trees…
