    U.S.A's Fast Food Industry

Fast food restaurants represent one of the largest segments of the food industry with over 200,000 restaurants and $120 billion in sales in the U.S. alone. Fast food restaurants, also known as quick service restaurants, are noted for their short food preparation time. Some of the largest players in this category include international giants like McDonald 's and Yum! Brands, national chains such as Wendy 's and Burger King and regional players like Jack In The Box and Sonic. Firms within the fast food industry fall under the market structure of perfect competition. Market structure is a classification system for the key traits of a market. The characteristics of perfect competition include: large number of buyers and sellers, easy entry to and exit from the market, homogeneous products, and the firm is the price taker. Many fast food franchises fit all or most of these characteristics. Competition within the industry as well as market supply and demand conditions set the price of products sold. For example, when Wendy 's introduced its $.99 value menu, several other companies implemented the same type of changes to their menu. The demand for items on Wendy 's value menu was so high because they were offering the same products as always, but at a discounted price. This change in market demand basically forced Wendy 's competition to lower prices of items on their menu, in order to maintain their share of the market. The previous example illustrates the elasticity of the fast food industry. Supply and demand set the equilibrium price for goods offered by franchises within the industry. Competitors of Wendy 's must accept the prices established by the consumer demand for the value menu. If consumers didn 't respond so positively to Wendy 's changes, other firms wouldn 't have had to adjust prices. On the flip side of this concept, there is no need for franchises to further…

    | News @ Jains - Jain Irrigation has developed hi-tech cultivation methods for Mangos: Ultra High Density Plantation (UHDP) of Mango at JISL’s farm in Ellaymuthur, Udumalpet, Coimbatore Jain irrigation started large scale mango plantations during 1996 we did not follow conventional planting distance of 10m x 10m; instead we adopted 4.5m x 4.5m, which is considered as medium density plantation (MDP). Results of MDP were remarkable and the orchard could start commercial production in the fourth year itself and later on yields were better than those from the conventional besides several other advantages. During year the 2005 JISL expanded its mango plantation in Ellaymuthur village of Udumalpet (taluka), district Coimbatore and replicated the same planting method. We could realize commercial yield from fourth year onwards and high yields are not enough to recover investments on land development and orchard establishment thus we were in search of better technology which can give higher yield. Though UHDP has shown success in mango at experimental levels but commercial plantations are not available in the country. During 2006 three scientists from JISL participated in a conference on Mango in South Africa and visited UHD plantations of Tommy Atkins variety of mango on large scale at a farmer cum scientist’s field. It gave us confidence that Indian varieties also could be grown successfully under this planting system. Subsequently JISL decided to have a semi commercial scale trial in Ellaymuthur farm and planted 4.5 acres of UHDP of cv. Alphonso and…

l`My favorite fruit is Mango. During summer mangoes are available in plenty. But we have to choose them correctly. Nowadays calcium carbide is resorted in mango ripening. Green mangoes are kept along with calcium carbide in godowns so that they ripen faster within two days. Then they are sold to shopkeepers. A fruit seller in Besant Nagar pointing a heap of mangoes stacked separately told that all these mangoes have been ripened using Kallu. He used to charge the right price and explain the reason for such high rates, and if they accept and willing to pay, he provides them the mangoes that have been ripened naturally. But he sells those that ripened using artificial means when customers intent on reducing prices.…

    Uganda Juice Industry

Agriculture and agricultural output are very important to the Ugandan economy. The agricultural industry is the largest employer of Ugandan's with 75% of the population earning a living from the industry. Food and agricultural raw materials account for 40% of the total exports from Uganda. Additionally, the sector contributes 22.7% to the Ugandan GDP. The large contribution of agricultural products to the Ugandan economy has led the government to promote value addition as a means of increasing the value of exports. According to the Ugandan Investment Authority (UIA), the demand for Uganda’s organic products is higher than the supply. This imbalance presents a high opportunity for export of organic fruit juice from Uganda. Fruits and farm produce are wasted or sold at very low prices during peak seasons due to inadequate storage facilities and lack of effective processing or preservation techniques, leading to high wastage levels. Juice production not only serves to add value to agricultural export but also serve as a way to prevent wastage of excess fruits. The juice industry has an opportunity to contribute to the Ugandan economy by increasing the value of the country’s exports and simultaneously preventing wastage of fruits so high in demand, and creating jobs for Ugandans.…
