A Child Called It
Ciara Sanders Mrs Porter English 10 – Period 3 21 March 2013 A Child Called "It" is an autobiography written by Dave Pelzer, it is about his extreme mental and physical abuse as a kid. His abuse begun around the age of 4, but he didn't get out of his torture until the age of twelve. In the book he tells us multiple, terrifying stories from his childhood. He tells about how his mom changed from a caring, warm mother into an abusive, cold-hearted alcoholic. You get to witness these horrific tales, however you are also able to so see how much courage this little kid had to have to keep fighting and to win his torturous battle with his mother. David Pelzer, the author of A Child Called "It" was born in 1962 and raised in his hometown of Rancho Mirage, California. After the time frame of this book, when he was free of the abuse, he was put into a series of foster homes. At the age of 18 he joined the air force and was determined to better himself. He is also the author of the sequel, The lost Child, and others like A Man Named Dave, My Story, and Moving On. Health Communications Incorporation in Deerfield Beach, Florida published a Child Called “It”. It was copy written in 1993 with exactly 200 pages. Dave was honored as The Outstanding Young Person of the World. He was also the first author to have four number one International Best Sellers and to have four books simultaneously on the New York Times Best Sellers List. I decided to use this book because it really grabbed my attention the first time I read it. This book is such a horrific story; it makes you wonder how he got through what he did. Also it's motivating, because if he got through that and is now a very successful author it means that you can honestly be anything you want to. The book itself was really detailed and it makes you feel his pain, and also it helps you realize the seriousness of child abuse. A detail about the book

Both children in the stories had basically no chance for survival or a normal life. In the book, A Child Called ‘It', the small boy is forced to live in a dork unfit place where he has never had one friend to his name, much like the person in the story I read, "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas."…

My biological father had made threats to kill our family because my mother chose to keep us away from his abuse and move on with our lives. Themes, Issues, Life lessons: I think that one of the life lessons that this book teaches us is that life is unfair and sometimes comes at a great cost. I think his writing was meant to be more on the inspiring and entertaining side, rather than informative. Although certain parts of the book were written very informatively, most of it was meant to tell a first-hand story about his experience. I believe he was writing for various reasons. Some of those include trying to get people to change their lives in some way, having people become…

But even though this book was emotional and a bit challenging to read, I enjoyed it. I enjoyed his style of writing and telling stories. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone really, but specifically to lawyers, law students, paralegals, but I would really encourage people who are strongly for the continuation of the death penalty to read this book. I was one of those people and this book totally changed my point of view. I feel like this is an important reason the author wrote this book, he wants people to be able to see what’s going on on the inside and change their mind about their views on the justice system, especially on the topic of death row. Which he did accomplish in my opinion, not only did he do that he also made me broadened my understanding of the subject on injustice towards people in our…

One teacher yelled at him to stop reading while he was in trouble and he threw a book. Walter Dean Myers described that in his autobiography Bad Boy, A Memoir by writing, “She saw me getting ready to throw the book and jumped to one side. The book hit her on the shoulder; and she screamed.” She threatened to call the police to escort him to a correction facility when school ended, but that didn’t happen, he was just picked up by his mother. One day he got knocked out, but Walter Dean Myers was the one who got in trouble. Books helped him find his happy…

There are some many stories in this book of women being abused and belittled, which would have made me give up reading it if it had not also had some of the most inspiring stories. Many of these women never gave up. They could easily have let death take them or succumb to the lives they were forced into but they didn’t. We have all heard stories about sex trafficking and how women are treated in these countries but this book brings the tragedies into the spotlight unlike any book I have ever read before. I know that my problems seem small compared to these women and young girls but this book has given me hope that I can overcome my own problems. It definitely teaches a lesson that hope is never truly lost as long as you do not give up.It also shows that evil never really wins.…

It is amazing, ridiculous, and sometimes scary how the brain deals with trauma. A Child Called It made me realize how common child abuse is. The abuse of a child can go on for years before anyone is aware that it is happening, and sometimes it is never detected. Reading this book opened my eyes to this harsh truth, and is something I think of often. The fact that a mother could cause so much pain and heartache to her own child is very hard for me to understand. I have always been shown so much love and support from my parents, it was hard to believe that not all parents treat their children the same way.…
