Why does the sight of a solitary child have such an impact on scrooge and why is it important?
.
Charles Dickens creates an image of Scrooge that is gradually changing from the cold person he is into someone who actually cares about others. Even by the time the first spirit gets there one can see a difference in Scrooge's character. The first scene of Scrooge's past is him as a schoolboy all alone at Christmas at his school. The ghost reminds Scrooge of him being alone and it upsets Scrooge greatly. "'The school is not quite deserted,' said the Ghost. ‘A solitary child, neglected by his friends, is left there still.' Scrooge said he knew it. And he sobbed" . This is one of the first scenes where Scrooge shows some sort of emotion other than anger or fear. Again, later in this Stave Scrooge cries again. "Scrooge sat down upon a form, and wept to see his poor forgotten self as he had used to be". After Scrooge gets sad the Spirit shows him Ali Baba and Scrooge is so excited to see him because he was someone who came to cheer Scrooge up
