A Classic Model Volcano for Science Projects
This volcano is the classic model volcano for science projects. You form the cone of the volcano around a bottle and then mix non-toxic kitchen chemicals to cause the volcano to erupt.
Form the Chemical Volcano
The cinder cone of the volcano is formed using clay. You'll need a lot less 'volcano' material if you make a general volcano shape out of paper and then just cover it with clay.

Erupting Volcano Ingredients
1:- warm water
2:- baking soda
3:- liquid dishwashing detergent
4:- vinegar
5:- You can color the lava by adding food coloring or powdered drink mix
Make the Chemical Volcano Erupt
To cause an eruption, fill the bottle most of the way full with warm water. Warm water produces a better eruption than cold water because the higher temperature increases the rate of the chemical reaction that makes the lava. Add a squirt of dishwashing liquid, some food coloring to color your lava, and a few spoonfuls of baking soda. When you're ready to start the eruption, pour vinegar into the volcano.

How the Chemical Volcano Works
The baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. The vinegar is weak acetic acid. The two chemicals mix together to form carbon dioxide gas. The carbon dioxide tries to escape the volcano in much the same way as it would if you had shaken a bottle of soda and then opened it. The dishwashing liquid traps the bubbles of gas, forming your lava. Gases and molten rock escape from a real volcano in much the same way as the carbon dioxide and water-based lava are forced out of the model volcano. You can recharge the volcano by adding more baking soda and vinegar so you can have as many eruptions as you like.

Shield volcanoes form when the products of eruption have low viscosity and are weak, so they do not pile up but spread. They are broad, gentle does that resemble a solder’s shield. Cinder cones are cone shaped piles of basaltic lapilli and blocks. Strato-volcanoes are large; cone shaped and is made of interleaved layers of lava, tephra and volcaniclatic debris. The prefix of its name emphasizes that they can grow to be kilometers high.…

Wizard Island's shape and characteristics makes it classified as a cinder cone, a type of volcano that has a bowl shaped crater at the top of mountain that may look more like a hill and is made mostly of lava not ash. A cinder cone volcano are built of lava that is "gas-charged" and shoots out clumps of lava from its vent which quickly solidifies and fractures in to many parts. Interesting characteristic of the lava is that they dont drop as liquid but as a circular or oval cone.…

There are two types of volcanoes, strato-volcanoes and shield volcanoes. Both are characterized differently, for example, strato volcanoes have sleep slopes, shaped like a tall narrow cone, but shield volcanoes have gentle slopes, shaped like a low, wide cone. The eruptions can be devastating, an example would be mount vesuvius, which erupted in AD 79, killing over 10,000 to 25,000.…

The eruptions, while sometimes are relatively quiet they produce lava flows that creep across the land moving between 2 and 10 miles per hour. These resulting lava flows stream molten rock which destroys everything in its path. It usually moves slowly enough the people can move out of its way. These eruptions can trigger other natural hazards such as earthquakes, mudflows and flash floods, rock falls and landslides. Wild fires and tsunamis are additional hazards that might be triggered by a volcanic eruption.…

We took an original ciaque style boat to the caldera. A ciaque is a traditional wooden fishing boat with rigging and a sail. On the way to the caldera we learned about ancient Santorini and the eruption. There are three islands that make up Santorini: Thira, Thirasia, and Aspronisi. The original island was a single much larger island with a giant center lagoon surrounded by cliffs. After the Thera volcanic eruption 3,600 years ago only three smaller islands remained. The Minoan civilization that inhabited the island during the late Bronze Age was similar to the one on Crete. The eruption was one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history creating a large caldera with volcanic ash deposits meters deep. It created a tsunami that reached…

Mixing mentos and soda produces this incredible eruption because of something called nucleation. The mentos are attracted to the Carbon Dioxide in the soda. After the mentos create so much pressure in the bottle, the bottle erupts making the mentos and the coke spray out of the bottle. Another reason why the eruption happens is because the nucleation site. Also because all that fizz is trying to find a way out. After that fizz is pushed out, the eruption…

Have you ever heard of Mauna Loa? Rising gradually to more than 4 km above sea level, Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on our planet. Its long submarine flanks descend to the sea floor an additional 5 km, and the sea floor in turn is depressed by Mauna Loa's great mass another 8 km. This makes the volcano's summit about 17 km (56,000 ft) above its base! The enormous volcano covers half of the Island of Hawaii and by itself amounts to about 85 percent of all the other Hawaiian Islands combined. Now let's get to finding out about lava.…

Volcanoes are mountains, typically conical, where lava comes out from a magma chamber through a crater or a vent. There are two types of volcanoes; Composite and Shield. A composite volcano can be referred to as a cone volcano. These volcanoes have tall narrow cone and a wide base. Their magma chambers contain thick acidic lava, which means sometimes you can walk faster than the lava when it is moving! The layers of a cone volcano are usually alternated between lava and ash. A shield volcano usually has a wide cone and gentle slopes. The lava that is ejected during an eruption is thin due to it being basic (alkali).…
