A Conversation in HOTEL
Receptionist: Hotel Serusa here. Good morning. Can I help you?
You : Yes, please. I would like to book two double rooms for three days.
Receptionist: When do you need the rooms?
You : I would like to reserve the rooms from 12 May to 14 May.
Receptionist: Could you please hold on for a minute? I’ll have to check the reservations first.
You : Yes, of course.
Receptionist: Let me see. Yes, you are in luck. There are two rooms available. What name shall I register them under, sir?
You : You can register them under Mr Gopal Krishnan. By the way, how much do the rooms cost?
Receptionist: The double rooms are RM200 per night. This includes free breakfast for two.
You : That’s wonderful. What facilities are available at your hotel?
Receptionist: Well, as a guest in our hotel, you can use the facilities for free. There is a big swimming pool, a gymnasium, tennis courts and squash courts. You can also hire boats for a trip round the island.
You : Are there any day tours available?
Receptionist: Yes, there are. Every day, there are buses which pick up guests from our hotel and take them on tours to various places. Among the places you can visit are the pottery factory, the mushroom farm and the crocodile farm. You could also go jungle trekking. You would probably take at least two days to see all these places.
You : That sounds fine. Oh, just one last detail. Could I have rooms that face the sea?
Receptionist: Don’t worry. All our rooms face the sea, with the breeze blowing in all day long.
You : I guess that’s all. Thank you.
Receptionist: You’re welcome.
You : Bye.

The hotel has 15 floors, and the lobby was magnificent. There was a lounge to hang out in with two couches, a t.v., and a couple chairs. Conner went up to the check-in and got the key to the room and an information brochure to tell them about the hotel. Conner and Allison’s room was 225 on the fifth floor which they got lucky because Allison does not like heights. The room had two beds, a plasma t.v., two chairs each with desk, and one enormous…

I took out my cell phone calmly and, “This is Sabastian Durham. I have a few questions for you. Do I own your company? Did your people have a task to do for me? Why do I have to wait for someone to take away the mess they had made before I can go to my room? Do you think I should take it upon myself to have trash removed? Oh, it’s company policy and yet I own the company! Are you hard of hearing? The hotel suite is mine, you idiot and the trash I’m about to throw-out is you and your entire board of directors. I believe I should be heading to my room in the next ten minutes. I’m so happy we had this little conversation. I know the rest of the hotel’s furniture will arrive in the next few days. I only need my accommodation done for now. Oh, your people are cleaning up the mess as we…

I push the door open. The bell tinkles, with a soft but shrill ring. A wave of rubber gloves and disinfectant masked with cheap air freshener washes over me. Chairs are cluttered in the waiting room of the dentists. Clusters of magazines lie on the scratched wood of the coffee tables, shiny bright plastic screaming out logos and slogans. A little way forward from where I stand is a desk. A smiling receptionist sits there. She seems to have been expecting me somehow, as she indicates to the couches and chairs.…
