A Cop's Life
I use to dream of being a cop , Its really tempting for most of the kids when they see someone in uniform, zooming through the streets in a cruiser with flashing lights .I always thought that to be cop all it takes is a good built and a brave heart .I am sure even for you A cop is a brave good looking person in uniform who helps to keep the city streets crime free , who makes sure that that the violators of traffic gets a ticket .This story I read was a real eye opener for me and changed my way of thinking about a officers job profile completely .
I never thought that the officers go through so much emotional trauma while doing their jobs. These men in black are not only brave physically but very brave mentally as well .It’s not an easy job to see a young kid drenched in blood die in your arms and you are so helpless that you can’t save his life .While the officer is waiting for the ambulance its traumatizing because he could remember that kid from the college basketball game or late night traffic check last week.
It does not end for him here; he has to give the message of the young guy’s death to his parents. Imagine coming home, and not having the slightest clue to where your teen is, or has been all night. The doorbell finally rings after waiting and waiting for hours, yet it’s not your son or daughter standing in front of you, it’s a deputy officer. It’s obviously hard on the parents to hear about their child dying in a car accident due to a foolish mistake, but it’s harder for a father of two young kids to break it to them.
The writer of this story did a phenomenal job in explaining every little detail of the story. From the curve of the highway, to the position of the dead body. I was able to read a single sentence and picture everything in my head right away because of the unique description. This story has a great moral value, as well as the effects on others because of one choice you might make just for the heck of it. Drunk driving isn’t anyone elses

Professionals should be neutral on their job, and avoid their personal response because it can have a negative impact on their professionalism. For some people ignoring the circumstances’ of others can be somewhat difficult; however, others can be more neutral. In the video Blue Bloods the officer had the kidnapped case; where the victim was a little girl. I, personally believe what he did to rescue her was the right way, yet in a professional view was wrong because, sadly, in those cases police should not take advantage of their authority. By responding to his emotions the officer rescued the victim and saved her life. If he wouldn’t use his own force chances for the girl to survive was going to be little. By doing this, he put his persona…

The nature of police work can be one of stress and long, hard working hours in which police officers deal with many types of situations that endanger themselves and their fellow officers. The fact that many people do not trust, appreciate, or support the police department is a terrible result of the public being taught to hate them. They do not like the police presence and the authority that the police have over them. Once a police officer shoots a suspect who more than likely deserved it due to the intent of harming or killing a civilian or a fellow officer, the public outcry is that the police are killers and that they will shoot anyone they come into contact with. Although we hear about police shootings in the news that grip our attention, we must put ourselves in the shoes of a police officer as we consider the training her or she has received and realize how the levels of stress and quick decision making to stay alive can result in a police shooting.…

    Cop In The Hood

In Moskos book, Cop in The Hood, he gives readers a preview of what it’s like being a cop and working as a cop from a sociological perspective. Mosko shows several leadership skills throughout the entire book due to the fact that he provides honesty and reality to what it is like to be a cop, even though he did this primarily just to write a book. Leadership is a major feature in police work and in order be a good cop or even a potential police officer you have to learn from being in the environment of crime or you’ll be out of a job. In my opinion Mosko does have what it takes to be a cop. He has the leadership skills he needs, he has the street smarts you need to have. All around he just has all the qualities.…

People feel this was the result of a racial issue more than the officer just doing his job. I personally agree somewhat because this is not the first time an unarmed black male teen has been killed. No one including the police have the right to kill unless it was an act of self-defense. In this case, it was not because he was unarmed and had no way of harming the officer. The officer should have chosen a better way to handle the situation instead of pulling a trigger and murdering someone. Even with common knowledge of that being wrong, the officer was still let go with no major punishment of prison.…

It is unavoidable to look away from this injustice. For years, people suffer from these crimes of violence! Officer's use of brute force to take down criminals, even the innocent if they don’t comply with the law. These barbaric strategies police officers do to “protect us” have not benefited us. We fear when we see a cop. We fear when our cars are stopped. We fear when we see their weaponry. Police officers are supposed to make us feel safe, but look at the mess we find ourselves in.…

In this type of suicide, a person intentionally engages in life-threatening behavior to induce a police officer to shoot that person. His/her goal is to provoke the law enforcement officer to a lethal response. This is distinguished from other police shootings by three elements: the person should show an intention to die, the person understands the finality of the act, confronts law-enforcement official with such extreme behavior that the officer is compelled to act with deadly force.…

Just like how there are people like me who are against police brutality, there are those who feel as if police brutality is not a problem. For example, counter-arguments suggest, “Police have the right to protect themselves.” (Debate.org). They ask you to think about how the officers put their lives in jeopardy every single day when they go on their shift. Yes, they put their lives in jeopardy, however, that is what they signed up for. They accepted the conditions that came with becoming a police officer and knew the possibilities of what could happen out in the field.…

Professions are guided by codes of ethics to aid them in performance of their duties and to ensure maintenance of high standards of conduct. Police officers are faced with a maze of obligations in the performance of their official duties. The “Law Enforcement Code of Ethics” and “Canons of Police Ethics” were created to make explicit the conduct considered appropriate for police officers and to guide them in the performance of their duties. Although police have these guides, many are faced with ethical dilemmas, also known as a moral dilemmas. This mean the officer is challenged to make a decision which sometimes conflicts with societal and personal ethical morals and values and provide no satisfactory outcome. In ethical dilemmas it is assumed the individual who abide by societal norms, such as codes of law or religious teachings will make a good ethical decision but that is not always the result. The ethical framework from which an officer performs his duties and meets his obligations to the profession and to society is of considerable importance to the well-being of the community in which he works. It is imperative; therefore, that a strong code of ethics is established as a guide within the law enforcement agency, that this code be well understood by all officers, that it be made second nature through training, and that it is faithfully enforced through example by the departmental chain of command. The department must establish rigorous controls and apply appropriate disciplinary measures when required to make certain that the code of ethics is taken seriously by all officers. The need for diligent enforcement of such a code is made all the more critical by the changing dynamics of our society, by the complexities of its ethnic and racial fiber, and by the difficult that officers face in attempting to enforce often unpopular laws.…

    Suicide by Cop

"Suicide-by-cop" or "Police Assisted Suicide" are terms that have been the topic of conversation a little more than warranted these days. It seems that "suicide-by-cop" has been an ever growing phenomenon. The term "suicide-by-cop" is used to describe a suicidal person who consciously provokes police and engages in life-threatening behavior that will invoke or force a police officer to react with deadly force. This type of suicidal person relies on the decision of the police whether or not they live or die. The suicidal person may want to die or even have the intention to kill themselves, but cannot seem to bring themselves to take their own life. Some are afraid of the pain and others are just plain confused. So, they use the police as their scapegoat to end their life. Each suicide-by-cop incident bears its ' own unique style. Some suicidal persons give dramatic performances before they draw their weapon. They want the attention of another person, perhaps someone they are angry with to witness this performance because they think they are getting revenge on them. Like an "I 'm gonna show you" attitude. It makes me question whether these people are actually in their right frame of mind as the researchers so insist. Any rational person would realize that by causing such a tragedy, they are not hurting anyone but themselves. Also, some suicidal persons may intentionally disobey the law to provoke the police into a confrontation or stand-off. Most of these people do not have ill feelings towards police and may even view the police as providing one final service for them.…

Some of the police departments are facing from society today are the corruption, on-the-job dangers, and the use of deadly force. When things like this happen and they need to use their power you have the worry that someone will try to blame you for racial profiling and exposure to civil liability. One of the hardest things the police have to do is serve a multicultural society. Multicultural society being the most challenging thing that face American law enforcement today. Police corruption has been something that has been going on for many years. Though you have many officers out there that will do their jobs with the up most professionalism, there are officers out there that think they can use their title to do think they shouldn’t be doing. For an example “In 2006, for example, Border Patrol Agent Oscar Antonio Ortiz pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to smuggle aliens into the United States (Schmalleger, 2011, p.268)” Doing things the police are not supposed to do like this example gave is what give police officers a bad name. I think that this is a wonderful statement made that I think is very true for all of the people around that believe in the police officers to help them with crimes. “For Policing to be successful, and crime reduction efforts to be effective, citizens must have trust in the police (Schmalleger, 2011, p.273)” The on the job danger is something that everyone in the world knows that police have to deal with every day. Police officers never know what they could be walking into at any time. In Washington D.C. they have a law enforcement memorial wall that has names of 12,561 law enforcement officers that have been killed in the line of duty. More than 6,000 officers name have been added to that wall since…

Imagine a man who is in his mid-forties, he has a nice house and nice car, with 2 beautiful children, ages 14 and 18. He is one of those parents who has done everything and anything for his kids, as any parent would. He has gone through all the hard times of raising them and taking care of them, and they are almost on that brink of becoming adults. Then one Friday night, he gets a call at 2:45 in the morning. It’s the police. They start off with “We regret to inform you….” And proceed to tell him that his 18-year-old son, the one who had just mowed the lawn earlier that day and taken out the trash, his pride and joy, was now dead. They say the cause of death was that he had been drinking,…

    * Many police departments require that applicants be high school graduates; an increasing number expect some college education. Applicants usually must be at least twenty-one years of age and U.S. citizens. In many communities, applicants must meet minimum requirements for height, weight, eyesight, and hearing. Because most police departments fall under civil service regulations, applicants must pass written tests that measure their analytical skills. Rigorous physical examinations and background checks are also required. New recruits often participate in formal classroom training in police academies. After graduating they continue to train on the job with experienced officers for three to twelve months. In small communities there may be no formal training program. Officers are usually encouraged to continue their education by taking college courses in criminal justice. Police Officers usually wear a uniform while on duty.…
