A Damascus Road Experience
A Damascus Road Experience

By: AMC

The story of Saul, or Paul as he was known later, began in Jerusalem in AD 35. Saul was 30 years old exactly the same age as Jesus when he began his ministry.

Grandfather said to me, “Son you are about half the age that Saul and I were as we watched Stephen, the Christian stoned to death.” He told me that he was telling me this story to help me understand that God could use anyone to tell the good news of Jesus if they were willing to change.

Grandfather met Saul when he was thirteen and lived In Jerusalem. They were studying Orthodox Judaism under the famous teacher Gamaliel. Saul was Jewish but a Roman citizen. He was boor in Tarsus, and his Jewish name Saul of Tarsus as was a common practice in those days. After his Damascus road experience, he was called Paul which was confusing for me; but we will get to that later. Saul’s father was a Pharisee and he had always been taught the laws and teachings of the Old Testament. Saul was a superior student and eager to learn. Grandfather said the only reason he studied Judaism was because he insisted after they graduated grandfather kept in touch with Saul and they hung out occasionally. Grandfather said he would never forget the events he was about to tell me. He said it was a cold, damp, dreary day as it had raided that morning. Saul had dropped by and asked if he wanted to go with him to the city of Jerusalem to watch as the high priest questioned a Christian and Stephen. He had been accused of blasphemous words against the holy place and the law. He had said that Jesus of Nazarth would destroy the temple and change the laws of Moses. Saul was a leaded of Judaism and knew the inside story, he told grandfather that the high priest had no real evidence against Stephen so they hired men to lie and misrepresent Stephen arguments concerning his Jesus. Grandfather said he knew that Jesus had supposedly risen from the dead and appeared to his followers. They said he

He went house to house dragging people from their homes and sending them off to prison. He was even present at the stoning of Stephen who preached the word of Christ but was dragged out of town and stoned to death. Following this Saul headed to Damascus to hunt Christians. It was on this journey that his conversion to “Paul” occurred. This was indeed a conversion in faith but I believe not a conversion in which he really was (esortmant.com, 2008).…

In the life of St. Paul, the young persecutor of the Church that he would later die for journeyed to Damascus when a great light appeared and the voice of Christ spoke, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?.... I have appeared to you, to appoint you a minister and a witness...rescuing you...to open [the eyes of the Jewish people and of the Gentiles] that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God….” After this experience, Paul was no longer called Saul in the Bible. Many conclude that this name change is similar to that of Abraham; however, as a Roman citizen, Paul had two names for the two cultures he lived in--the Roman Empire (Paulus) and the Jewish nation (Saulos). This name change is still symbolic as it represents a new mission to follow the will of God serving not only the Jews but also the Gentiles.…

He had gone and preached promoting the crusade against Muslims of the east of Spain and had been turned down by nearly everyone who he had come across. After he had received the letter from Jesus he arrived at the entrance of Abbey of Saint-Dennis and had announced that he would lead an “army” of children to rescue the holy land. In the summer of 1212 three armies of children, each more than thirty thousand strong, setout from France and Germany, to walk to Jerusalem and rescue the Holy Sepulchre from the armies of Muslims. What I do know is that Jesus was resurrected and he did ascend to heaven. No, I did not see it with my own two eyes, but I do feel his presence all around me and through me. Even before doing this paper, I have always known and believed in Him and I always will. Just like Mary Magdalene, the apostles, Paul, James and every one of the other witnesses, others will know the truth in due time. They will know that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, The Chosen One who died for our sins on the cross, then resurrected three days later and ascended to heaven. For those disbelievers, one day they will know the truth, hopefully sooner rather than later on judgement day. Jesus Christ of Nazareth was factually resurrected.…
