The story of Saul, or Paul as he was known later, began in Jerusalem in AD 35. Saul was 30 years old exactly the same age as Jesus when he began his ministry.
Grandfather said to me, “Son you are about half the age that Saul and I were as we watched Stephen, the Christian stoned to death.” He told me that he was telling me this story to help me understand that God could use anyone to tell the good news of Jesus if they were willing to change.
Grandfather met Saul when he was thirteen and lived In Jerusalem. They were studying Orthodox Judaism under the famous teacher Gamaliel. Saul was Jewish but a Roman citizen. He was boor in Tarsus, and his Jewish name Saul of Tarsus as was a common practice in those days. After his Damascus road experience, he was called Paul which was confusing for me; but we will get to that later. Saul’s father was a Pharisee and he had always been taught the laws and teachings of the Old Testament. Saul was a superior student and eager to learn. Grandfather said the only reason he studied Judaism was because he insisted after they graduated grandfather kept in touch with Saul and they hung out occasionally. Grandfather said he would never forget the events he was about to tell me. He said it was a cold, damp, dreary day as it had raided that morning. Saul had dropped by and asked if he wanted to go with him to the city of Jerusalem to watch as the high priest questioned a Christian and Stephen. He had been accused of blasphemous words against the holy place and the law. He had said that Jesus of Nazarth would destroy the temple and change the laws of Moses. Saul was a leaded of Judaism and knew the inside story, he told grandfather that the high priest had no real evidence against Stephen so they hired men to lie and misrepresent Stephen arguments concerning his Jesus.
