For the past five months I’ve worked as a nursing assistant. It all started my senior year in high school. I went to LCCTC and I attended the nursing assistant program. In nine months I graduated and started working as a nursing assistant at a nursing home. Being a nursing assistant is hard. You have to have patience, love, caring, and do your job right.
The nursing home I work at is called Willow Valley Retirement Home. They have a lot of buildings, but I work on the first building they built. It’s a small place and they try to make it look like home. There’re three hall ways: north, south, and west. North and south are the skilled care units and west is the rehab unit. I work on the skilled care where most residents need more assistance.
There’re six rooms on each side of the hall. They have private rooms for the residents that don’t like to share rooms with someone else. The private rooms are bigger than the other rooms. Besides the rooms, they have two dining rooms, one for the people that need assistance and the other one for the rest of the residents. They use the launch to do activities with the residents. This room is a regular size and it has a flat screen TV, tables for the residents to play cards or puzzles in and two tan sofas for residents and visitors to sit on. Also, there’s a door that leads to the patio, where the activities director takes residents to sit outside on the benches. When you walk in the dining room, the first thing you see is the big black piano that they have against the windows. They have lots of tables for the residents to sit down.
The first thing I do when I come in to work is I get the people that need assistance ready to go to the dining room for breakfast. What I do is I give the resident a partial bath, which includes face, hands and perineal areas. Then, I dress
