A Day I Spend on Bed
A day spend on bed
I am a healthy person and never fall ill, whereas my sister is often ill. My father, mother, grand mother, all are very careful about her health and look to all her wishes. When she is not well we all have to slow down the TV, switch off the fan, and keep our voice low. One day when my mother work me, I did not feel like getting up. I had slight headache. Mother touched my forehead and said I had temperature. How happy I was! Now everybody would have to do what I wish.

My mother brought milk and biscuits for me. She scolded my sister for making noise. She asked my sister to switch off the TV. I felt very important-almost a lord, little did I know that this joy was to be short-lived.

Soon my temperature rose, I felt hot and restless. The headache became severe. It was real troublesome. To make matters worse, my favorite uncle dropped in. He had two tickets for the movie I wished to see. As I was not well, he took my sister.

The last straw on the camel’s back was when I saw the feast mother had prepared for uncle. Everybody sat down for lunch. They had such fine dishes while I was forced to take bitter pills, milk and a little porridge. I cursed my fate!

Luckily by next day my temperature came down to normal. I learnt a lesson of my life. I shall never let myself fall ill

The ER waiting room smelled stale. Sick babies and toddlers were crying, waiting to see a doctor. My brother was laying on the tan tiled hospital floor. He was shaking terribly as the antibiotics from the previous hospital wore off and the infection set in more. Both of his hands were red and swollen. His right hand, had a black mark from where the IV initially infected. His left hand was swollen to the size of a small balloon, kind of like a blown up rubber glove I used to get from the doctor when I was younger. My mom took her jacket off to cover him. His skin was hot to the touch but he was still freezing. His fever was 101.2 but there were no open rooms in the ER at our second attempt at a hospital. We had to get him antibiotics…

My mother got really sick for about a week and could barely even stand up. Since she was not able to, I played the mother's role and it was challenging. One challenge I needed to face was looking after my little sister. I fed her, changed her clothes, helped her with her homework, made her feel better when she was upset, and put her to bed. I was also supposed to help my brother with his homework and make his breakfast, but he was not as challenging because he is older and more mature. In addition to all that, did my chores and took care of my mother. I was very busy and overwhelmed taking care of my siblings, mother, and myself. That week of playing an adult’s role made me realize how grateful I am to have a mother who takes care of me in the same way I took care of…

It was snowing that morning but the job of being a mom never ends. As I walk to the front door of her home, she comes to the door and lets me in, greeting me as usual. She takes my coat as I follow her to the kitchen, where she is trying to feed Matthew a bowl of rice as he runs around the kitchen with his toys. She starts to call out “Matthew!” every time that he leaves the kitchen, I can tell that she is juggling too many things at a time because while she is still trying to feed him, she is also serving herself some rice and tortillas so that she can eat.…

My mother thankfully had a backup plan. “We will stay with my cousins they don’t live too far from here”. I had no clue who or what she was talking about, but none the less we caught a taxi and made our way to her cousin’s house. When we pulled up to this little home, we were greeted outside with big hugs and kisses. It was only on the night before the burial, when the last of the visitors had left and the living room where Uncle rests was somewhat tidied, that we felt the burden of Uncle’s loss. It was past midnight, and most of my cousins were either asleep on their beds or passed out on the couches. Those who were still awake, myself included, gathered in the living room with the adults. Aunt Aile finally came out of the bedroom—the one she used to share with…
