A day i will never forget
Everything was normal, but then something happened, something that I had to live with for the rest of my life. I can still barely believe it, mostly because I don’t want too, but I will do my best to recall this day, the worst day of my life.

“Are you ready to go?” I asked Jim as I jumped out of his computer chair. We were going to take my new Carola for a spin.

“I don’t know, Mrs. Smith is really piling on the homework,” said Jim, looking at his very full backpack.

“Jim, it’s the Queen’s Birthday. She didn’t give us the day off school, just to do school work,” I said, in what I hoped was a convincing voice.

“Fine, I’ll come, but if I get a detention, it’s your fault,” he said as he threw a pillow at me.

At the time I was happy I’d convinced Nate to come for a drive. Little did I know, this was the worst mistake I’d ever made.

“Hey Mark,” I yelled out my window as we drove next to his car. Mark is a mate from school. He’s very competitive, especially when it comes to cars, but all up, he’s a pretty likable guy.

“Hey Steve and Jim, do you want to race?” he asked with a smirk on his face, probably because he knew if I accepted he would win.

“Why not?” I asked as I drove up to the mark where we usually started a race. I said yes to the race knowing I would lose, but I didn’t really care. Jim and I only wanted a bit of fun.

As I revved my engine, Jim told me how much better this was than homework. I smiled and nodded my head. I liked hearing Jim say this. He is always so worried about school life that sometimes he forgets to just chill.

I took off full speed with Mark’s car only centimeters in front. In that second I didn’t have a care in the world. I was in a new fast car with my best mate. What could go so wrong? At this point I didn’t know myself.

As we came around the bend, I noticed that I was ahead of Mark. I thought I was going to beat him, but I should have known that he wouldn’t let me. Mark is the kind of guy that will do whatever it takes to win.

The next thing I know, I’m in the hospital waiting room with Jim’s parents.

How did this happen? Why is Jim in intensive care and all I have is a few scratches? Why didn’t I listen to Jim when he suggested we did homework? All these questions filled my mind, as the doctor walked towards us.

“I’m sorry.” As soon as the doctor said those two words my mind logged out. Jim was gone and it was all my fault!
I will never forget that day as it still haunts me in my dreams, in vehicles as well as when I’m walking in the streets.

Nate: maybe she’s checking the “boring books that nobody wants to read” section. She’s back with a book the size of a stack of lunch trays. I can see the headlines now: BOY CRUSHED BY GIANT BOOK. CHAPTER NINE Troll Snatching I opened my eyes and two giant wart covered trolls who bore an eerie similarity to the creature that had haunted me in my nightmare were standing over me glaring down. Their red beady eyes were filled with detest and I screeched loud enough to wake the dead. One of the monsters stuck his hairy hideous hand over my mouth and the other sprinkled around some kind of teal colored magical dust. I breathed it in and I was under their spell. "Get up and get dressed boy!"…

With white knuckles, rigid muscles and shallow breaths, I drove down the winding road with its faded lines and crumbling shoulders. A little over a year ago I was a senior in high school, leaving school with the weekend ahead of me, ready to unwind, and enjoy the night with my friends. On my trip home my mother called me and asked if I could go out of my way to pick my sister up from school; reluctantly, I tell her that I will. Before that call my friends and I had established that I would be driving us to the senior class tailgate before the football game that night. Wanting to get to the tailgate faster, I begin to force my foot on the gas pedal a little more, without thinking about the consequences of my risk. Suddenly, I look back in my rear view mirror and see the dreaded red, blue, and white lights flashing. I look down at my speedometer and realize…
