A Drowning Experience

Tommy had just learnt how to swim and was eager to demonstrate his newly acquired skills to his best friends. Immediately after school, he invited his friends, Gary and John, “Shall we go swimming at the crystal clear lake behind my flat tomorrow morning?” His friends nodded readily. Tom’s mother had warned him about the dangers but his bursting desire to show off got the better of him and he simply cast her words to the winds.

The next morning, the sun shone brilliantly across the glistening water, casting golden shadows dancing on the lake. The boys gathered punctually at the lake bank. They quickly stripped down to their swimming trunks and jumped into the water. They waded merrily and frolicked in the water and laughed boisterously as the water hit their faces. Tommy suddenly made a suggestion, “Shall we compete and see who reach the other end of the lake first?” Before Tommy could finish his words, the other two boys had already taken up the challenge and started swimming right away.

Just when Tommy was about to get ready, he felt an acute pain on his left thigh but ignored it. However, seconds later, the pain accentuated and his left leg began to feel numb and heavy. Seized by panic, Tommy started thrashing in the water to stay afloat but he felt like a fast sinking ship and swallowed many gulps of water. Presently, he waved his hands frantically and screamed hysterically, “Help me!” Gary and John turned around and their blood froze at the hair-raising sight. Fortunately, they quickly got a grip on themselves and swam towards their distressed friend with every ounce of their strength.

With Gary and John’s concerted efforts, Tommy was finally dragged onto shore. However, Tommy’s face had already turned ghastly pale and he was rendered unconscious. Worst, his leg was bleeding profusely. Without a moment to spare, Gary raced to pick up his shorts, ransacked its pockets and found his mobile phone. He

Thinking that maybe there was a problem, Roy and Johnny pulled their gear back out and turned back toward the house in case they were needed after all. In the chaos that followed the group rushed toward the pool house to check on the wife of the man who’d initially sent the two paramedics packing. The group pushed ahead of the two men who could offer the most help if the woman had in fact ingested some pills. The family pushed each other and the two men as they all herded around the edge of the pool. Roy had not so graciously been shoved to the left and lost his footing on the slippery side of the pool. He unceremoniously took a splash along with the drug box. Johnny had eventually made it into the fray only to find out the lady had taken a bottle of aspirin and agreed to seek advice from her personal physician. Johnny fished the drug box from the water and offered his hand to his partner, but Roy hadn’t wanted or needed his help. In a normal situation this would be a call that would be joked about and a great deal of teasing would have followed. After the past week of unrest between the two friends, the situation only seemed to add fuel to the already smoldering…

    1. "When I recovered, Dad picked me up and heaved me back into the middle of the Hot Pot. 'Sink or swim!' he called out. For the second time, I sank. The water once more filled my nost and lungs. I kicked and flailed and thrashed my way to the surface, gasping for air, and reached out to Dad. But he pulled back, and I didn't feel his hands around me until I'd sunk one more time (Walls,6). Throughout the book, an irregular act of the author was clear mainly due to the harsh parenting style of the father. Although he wants to help her, he does not act with open arms. In other words, he is strict and harsh. For example, the passage states how the father would not help the daughter and forced her to learn how to swim on her own while making her face the situation of drowning. In addition, this passage was attention worthy since it was descriptive. The author clearly described specific details while drowning.…

The water glistened off the sun like a polished pearl. After strolling up to the shore, she gazed at the astounding view. She hopped into ice-cold liquid, and felt a chill crawl up her back. “How does it feel,” yelled a far off voice. “It feels great… jump right in,” she lied. She thought about how Lake Holcombe allows people to be themselves, spend time with family, and become stronger mentally and physically.…

Dr. Boggs sets all the equipment up so that we are ready to try the first activity which was wake surfing. The main activity my teammates wanted to do was wake surfing. None of them, including myself, had ever wake-surfed before, but it was one opportunity we could not miss out on. Cole, jumping out of his chair, could not wait to go first. He hopped out of the boat and swam towards the surf board. We all watched as Cole was about to be the first person on our team who would wake surf. “Now Cole there are a couple of steps that you have to do in order to get your board up and surf. First, you must lean back as far as you can with your left foot on the blue line and your right foot on the red line of the board. Next, when the boat starts to move, you have to press down on your right foot while tightly holding the rope with you left hand in front and right hand in the back. Finally, you will jerk forward and began to start surfing, but you have to stay low and on balance.”-Dr. Boggs. Cole was now ready to wake surf. He did all the steps Dr. Boggs had explained to him and he managed to fall face flat into the water. My teammates laughed as he tried to swim back to the board, but all that made me want to do was try it out for myself. Cole fell multiple times and was unable to stay on the board for more than ten…

For my conclusion I will write about the differences between people drowning in freshwater compared to people drowning in saltwater. When someone drowns it means that their lungs (respiratory system) has been blocked from receiving oxygen by a liquid. Majority of the time it is water that people drown in. “Drowning is the third most common cause of accidental death worldwide, accounting for 7% of all injury related deaths” (MedicineNet). Water is the most common way that people drown, but the two types of water that is common to Earth in masses are freshwater and saltwater. Both can drown you but in completely difference ways.…

One scorching July afternoon after a baseball tournament in Searcy, Arkansas, the whole team had stopped by the Holiday Inn where we had been staying for one last swim. As I looked around the inadequate pool I noticed everybody swimming in the deep end and having a blast except one person, Chandler Lowrey. We were only seven and eight year olds, but we all seemed to be excellent swimmers, but Chandler was still using the never failing, doggie paddle. I couldn’t let him be the butt of our jokes so I launched in next to him and began to swim. I could tell he was struggling to stay at the water’s surface. I tried my hardest to teach him how…

Its mouth was fingertips from my leg, when I delivered a skin piercing jab to the side of its head. To my surprise the shark was stunned. This could be my only chance to get away. As I screamed for help, I threw my arms over the boat. Struggling to pull myself up over the boat, my grandpa quickly ran over to me and lifted me over the boat. As I laid down on the boat’s deck I sighed in relief. After about a minute I finally regained…

The image I’ve chosen that inspires me is from Miharu Matsunaga. The whole composition relates to how I feel about design which is to just think out of the box. However, there is another image that comes to mind when. The artwork is by Roy Lichtenstein called Drowning Girl. The first image connects with the Lichtensteins’ image because when I see the word ‘think’ I think about my senior year of high school where the Drowning Girl was painted in my classroom wall of my computer class. That painting made me feel inspired to create so I started to learn how to use Illustrator. I started using photoshop and illustrator but whenever I looked at the Drowning Girl I felt the need to make my designs to my greatest potential. There were times where…

A near death experience, or NDE, can mean many different things not only mentally, but physically as well. An experience can occur when the heart stops and somehow comes back to life whether it be naturally or by doctors, or it can happen while a person is in a type of danger that is going to result in death no matter what. In addition, a person can also have a near death experience without the threat of impending physical death (Atman). Many factors come into having an experience as serious as this, so people who have had a NDE are greatly affected.…
