A Good Man Is Hard to Find: Irony
“A Good Man is Hard to Find”
In the short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” there is irony all through the pages. It shows how you should follow your gut instinct when you think you shouldn’t go somewhere, when you know something bad is going to happen. In the story it also talks about how the grandmother wore her nice clothes in case of an accident, she wanted to look like a lady in case anything bad was to happen. The grandmother was constantly talking about the good in people, but was she a good woman? The first bit of irony the story throws at the reader is on the first page when the grandmother is talking about how she doesn’t want to go to Florida because that’s where the Misfit is headed. As the grandmother is trying to get her son Bailey to listen as she says, “The Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida and you read here what it says he did to these people. Just you read it. I wouldn’t take my children in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it. I couldn’t answer to my conscience if I did” (O’Connor 281). Now I don’t believe that the ironic twist is that the misfit was headed to Florida just like the family, I believe that the twist is that the Misfit just so happen be on the same dirt road that the grandmother asked her son Bailey to turn down later on in the story. The grandmother wanted to turn down this dirt road in Georgia because she remembered an old plantation house she had visited when she was younger. After turning down the road she then remembered that this was not the road at all, the old plantation house she had remembered was in Tennessee, not Georgia.
The second major ironic twist that stood out to me was how the grandmother wore good clothes to go on a road trip, “In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once she was a lady” (O’Connor 282). The grandmother wore a navy dress with a straw hat that had white violets on it. Indeed the grandmother was dressed like a

Flannery O’Conner portrays many messages through her story “A Good Man is Hard to Find”. Religion is shown throughout the story from the Grandmothers point of view. She is a classy lady and judges many on her knowledge of Christ to determine whether or not they should be considered “good”. This story displays that God’s grace can be received by anyone, in any form and that each and everyone can be saved, according to the Grandmother’s judgment, actions, and epiphany. The Grandmother spent most of her life criticizing others on how to achieve her view of gods expectations. She believes that if you are good then you must come from a good family and live through the beliefs of the church. In the end, during the Grandmother’s epiphany she receives gods grace and tries desperately to pass it on to the Misfit, believing that anyone can be saved by god. However, he is pure evil and does not understand the feeling of “good” even though it may lay deep inside him. The Misfit rejects the presence of God in his heart, and that is the main cause of his evilness. The Misfit conscious threatens his evil and he then, decided not to accept his chance to receive God‘s Grace. The Grandmother lived her life judging what is “good” and in the end ironically ended up in the most evil hands, the Misfit.…

Next, the Misfit comes to a strange realization: he wishes he could have been there, because if he had he “wouldn’t be like [he is] now” (14). It is as if the Misfit is becoming aware of the man he could have been as he speaks, and more importantly, he appears to desire the different life. The realization hits the reader awkwardly, coming across as out of place and unexpected. This sudden emotional response mimics that of the grandmother, who is able to sense the Misfit’s sudden vulnerability and use it to her advantage. At this moment, the grandmother does something unprecedented: she reaches out to the killer and calls him “one of my babies . . . one of my own children”…

Irony and surprise are common literary devices authors use to communicate their ideas when writing literary works. Irony allows the writer to suggest an interpretation that is different from the literal meaning of the words used in the text. The element of surprise allows the writer to manipulate the reader’s expectations and take them somewhere completely different. In the short stories, A Good Man Is Hard to Find by Flanney O’Connor and Happy Endings by Margaret Atwood, both authors use the element of irony and surprise to engage readers and to develop deeper levels of meaning in their text.…

A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor is a short story that depicts a family road trip to Florida that ends in an abysmal tragedy when they meet the Misfit, a remorseless convict who has escaped from prison. In the beginning, the Grandmother is obsessed with everything worldly and superficial. She is completely focused on herself in relation to how others think of her. Towards the end of the story, the grandmother finds herself in ominous dialogue with The Misfit. In the story, The Misfit represents a quasi-final judgment. He does this by acting like a mirror. He lets whatever The Grandmother says bounce right off him. He never agrees nor disagrees with the grandmother, and in the end, he is the one who kills her. At the end of the story, before the Grandmother meets her fate, she has a moment of redemption. She finally distinguishes The Misfit for who he really is, not a psychopathic killer on the loose; but a person just like herself. The Misfit, being a man who is not created from social class; he is a simple human being just like the grandmother. At this point she sees herself in relation to everyone else. She finally realizes that she is not made by her class. Society makes the class, and she just fits into it. She shows this by claiming that The Misfit could be one of her own children. This story is meant to be interpreted as a parable, whereby O'Connor made skilful use of symbolism to bring about messages such as the social-superiority and the lack of spiritual faith that exist amongst common people; and the grace in humans is exposed, only when facing adverse and fatal circumstances.…

First and most obvious is the irony between the grandmother and the Misfit. On its face, the grandmother appears to be a "normal" Southern lady who upholds traditional Christianity. Yet, it quickly becomes clear that the grandmother is not necessarily honest or respectful, while the Misfit embodies all of these traits. On the other hand, Readers are introduced to a quirky family and what appears to be a typical family car trip, but the story ends on a more philosophical note when the Grandmother attains a state of grace at the moment she realizes that the murderer is "one of her children." So, I like the plot of the story and…

Many people struggle with the idea of what it means to be a “good” person and what it means to be a “bad” person. The human quest to be good drives virtually everything we do but sometimes in the end may not amount to enough. We all want to be good, but it 's not easy. If you ask an evil person and a good person the same question, "Are you a good person?" Who do you think is more likely to say yes, the good person or the evil person? Everyone has their own opinion about certain issues, and they depend on their values, judgment, and beliefs to see them through their difficulties. Flannery O’Connor, an American writer, was quoted as saying "I see from the standpoint of Christian orthodoxy. This means the meaning of life is centered in our Redemption by Christ and that what I see in the world I see in relation to that" (Contemporary Authors 402). In the short story "A Good Man is Hard to Find," Flannery O’ Connor illustrates her argument of good and evil through a grandmother who struggles with her own insincere sense of goodness, and the Misfit who represents evil. Only true goodness illuminates when in the face of something bad. In the story a character who views herself as good comes to realize that this goodness that she believes she has cannot protect against the works of evil.…

Another irony is seen in the way the people behave. “…, and the other boys soon followed his example, selecting the smoothest and roundest stones;…” “They greeted one another and exchanged bits of gossip as they went to join their husband” (Page 358). Those two sentences in the story show fun and happy condition, although they actually know what they are going to do next (which is killing somebody).…
