“How could I resist?” she later said about that day. It was when everyone was fleeing when the Japanese were taking over Kweilin, and we were left on the side of the road. Mei Ching, and her husband were poor at the time, but they still picked us up off of the side of the road. Although, there was writing on the back of the photo, Mei Ching and Mei Han could not read. By the time someone was able to read the note to them, they had already grown to love us. Instead of taking us to the address on the back of the photo, they took care of us. She told us that we were born into a great family, and that she was going to take us back to see our real mom and grandparents. She showed us the picture of our parents. My sister Chwun Hwa and I felt an immediate connection to our parents.…

“Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light.” Helen Keller. In Freak The Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, one of the main themes is Friendship. Kevin and Max were great friends. “I know it’s ok, he’s not flipped out because I picked him up and put him on my shoulders like he was a little kid.” (32) This is a true friendship. When they become Freak the Mighty, it strengthens their emotional relationship. “This is why we came here, so Freak could show me where he’s been. The place is important to him. I understand this much.” (52) Real friends care about what their friends care about. This book is all about friendship.…
Friendship stood out to me as one of the motifs throughout to me – from my perspective friendships are a big part of life. Friendships have helped me get to the place I am in my life, with influence from other qualities in my…
I think the author use flashback technique in her story. She write some scene which takes the narrative in time from the current point in the story. The readers understand that the author write about Old China, because she describe some traditions. Women in that time have not the rights, the main character could not say her opinion for her husband, father, brothers. Women can only do what the men order them. But in the old China women and men have different rights. Men can command the women, men more dominate at that time. Also, they have choice to study or marry. In addition, them government or parents give a field.…
The novel, Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, is an extraordinary story of two men who travel together through tough situations and remain loyal to one another. They develop a strong friendship and share many qualities. My best friend, Alla, and I have known each other for over seven years and we have a strong bond. What binds us together are our differences and loyalty, just like Lennie and George, but unlike them, we have different dreams.…

Sometimes we heard her call him “Dad” but when she was not happy with his behavior she called him by his first name. After the sequence where he gets angry at his wife and knocks her over while she is carrying 12 full glass bottles of milk, he behaved a little better but always his kids are on the side of the mother. He could not imagine himself living in that situation. On the other hand, the mother was acting good and trying to make balance for everything. In the sequence when her son brought her flowers from the neighbor’s garden, though it made her irritated to have to cancel her trip, she kept smiling and remained calm. She was not happy with that situation but she wanted to make a change for her children.…
Politician, Hubert Humphrey once said, “The greatest gift of life is friendship, and I have received it”. Friendship is a very important aspect of life. Friendship gives the opportunity to escape from loneliness, to have someone be there in a time of need, to give support when mistakes are made, and allow an escape from reality when you’re feeling blue (Whitbourne). In the novel Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses characterization and conflict to help develop the theme that friendship is one of the most important aspects to live life to the fullest extent.…
Chung displays an arduous tone as he relays a new perspective of the Vietnam War. This ardor demonstrates the passion and love which had fueled the sacrifices of the Chung family and allowed them to stay alive and together throughout the devastating war. Their perseverance, motivated by love and respect of family, is the main component which drives Chung’s story with intensity and earnest. Not only is the family genuine in their love and respect for each other, but the passion and fervent desire to do anything for any relative truly encompass the memoir and bolster Chung’s theme of perseverance, family, and success amidst a time of war.…
A bond between two people is friendship despite there being many varieties. Looking for Alaska by John Green and Half my Facebook Friends are Ferrets by J. A. Buckle both have excellent examples of the theme of friendship with the main characters, Miles “Pudge” Halter in Looking for Alaska, and Joshua “Josh” Walker in Half my Facebook Friends are Ferrets. Through comparing and contrasting, the differences and similarities between the two events will be examined.…
The story of the first brother, Chueh-hsin, is unquestionably the most upsetting and saddest in this novel. Cheuh-hsin has lived his entire life in reverence and constant conformity with his elders. Although he is an "enlightened" person and does not unconditionally agree with many of the Confucian values, which he follows, he feels that his position in the social hierarchy of the family leaves him no other choice. As the "first son of the first son" he is the head of his household. As a result, he is forced to take on responsibilities he does not want. For this very reason, his two younger brothers, Cheuh-min and Cheuh-hui, scorn him. Chueh-hsin has lived his entire life following a non-resistant strategy. At an early age, he was prohibited from his dreams, by being forced into an arranged marriage, although his heart belonged to another woman, Cousin Mei. Although he comes to love the wife whom he lives with, he can never completely remove Mei from his heart and mind and neither can she, as is evident by her death, which is a result of her internal suffering through the years of separation and broken dreams from…
The narrator makes numerous attempts to talk to her husband, and at no time through the story does he actually open up and listen. An example of this, "I thought it was a good time to talk, so I told him that I really was not gaining here, and that I wished he would take me away." Instead of listening,…
Many times, it is debated as to what the most important quality of friendship is. Some say it is kindness, while some say it is trust. In the story Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses the similar relationships between George and Lennie and Candy and his dog, as well as their mistakes, to say that thinking of others before oneself is the most important part of a friendship. Thus, Of Mice and Men creates a parallel between the friendships between George and Lennie and Candy and his dog in order to suggest the value of selflessness in friendship.…
