A Heroes Journey
“A Heroes Journey”

“A hero is a ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles” Quoted by Christopher reeves. Christopher reeves was a famous actor but after his near-fatal horse riding accident on a cross-country course he could never go back into that business since 1995.

“ To kill a mockingbird ” by harper lee. Atticus finch is a significant character in Harper Lee’s to kill a mockingbird because he is an idol in the eyes of his children, a savior in the eyes of Tom Robinson and a hero in the eyes of modern society. A letter to Sophie by Carolyn martin and Ron Delezio is a day-by-day account of the emotional and physical ups and downs Ron delezio and Carolyn martin experienced when their daughter Sophie spent four months clinging to life.

Sophie deleizo has been through more than most of us could imagine. Being trapped under a burning car in her childcare centre which concluded in multiple skin grafts and amputations to heal the 85% burns on her body her recovery was going fantastic until her second near-fatal accident on a pedestrian crossing soon after her fifth birthday. Her story is unthinkably harrowing, as it means special care lifelong yet through all of this she still has a beautiful smile and amazing spirit. She has given everybody that has read or seen her story a tear their eyes she is the real meaning of hero. “ Everyday we walk into your room and give you energy from our hearts – another day on the roller coaster” quoted by Sophie’s mum Carolyn. Sophie deleizo is a hero in my eyes because even though she’s been to hell and back not once but twice she loves her life like any other 9 year old. Despite everything she has been through she sings and blows bubbles reads books to her mum and tells everyone around her that she loves them.

Atticus finch is a widowed working father who has the courage to rise above the prejudice of society and do what is right. Atticus is inspiring because it takes pure courage to stand up to a community set on doing what is wrong. Atticus is one of the heroes in the book “to kill a mockingbird” because he thinks that every single person black or white has a opportunity to be a individual person. He fought in a hopeless struggle with sincerity for what he believed in even though he knew he wouldn’t win. Whilst doing this he changed people’s opinions of the black community.

Tom Robinson, the young man Atticus will be defending, pays for the relentless stereotypes that are made in Maycomb every day. There is a fear of black male sexuality, triggered by stories of white women being raped and defiled by a black men. During the Tom Robinson trial, Atticus questions Tom and its showed that Bob Ewell physically, emotionally, and sexually abuses the his children. Not only did he bring justice to Tom Robinson but also caught bob Ewell lying. Atticus definitely set things straight in his time he knew exactly what to do and say. Atticus Finch proves worthy of being a great lawyer, father, friend and companion. The simple acts of heroism shown by Atticus saves Maycomb from sinking lower in the mess than they've already put themselves at. For this, he does the town justice and becomes the man they've been looking for all along.

The statement “A hero is a ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles” means that anybody could be a hero it doesn’t have to be a superhero or a famous movie star its just some ordinary individual who strives for the best and overcomes many obstacles that are given in life. Sophie delezio and Atticus finch are two examples or heroes. Sophie was a 2-year-old girl whose life was dramatically changed due to a horrific car crash into her childcare center. Sophie overcame many obstacles from her skin grafts to her infections that were fatal to even just surviving one day; this one girl shows strength and perseverance even when times are tough she doesn’t complain. She is a true hero, “ you are a special, special girl and have touched so many hearts it is overwhelming. Your bravery and courage are an inspiration to me. I love you so. X” quoted by uncle Greg. All and all Sophie is someone who I look up to in life and when life’s hard just think there are worse off people out there.

Atticus finch is a hero in a very different way to Sophie. He proved to everyone that black people have as much right to any white person. He stood up for someone in court and showed that he cared about anyone situation besides Bob Ewell. He showed his whole community that tom Robinson was a good guy & that Bob Ewell was the one to blame.

In conclusion Sophie and Atticus have both overcome very different problems. They have both proved to everyone around them that a hero can be anyone from a firefighter to a police officers to a 9 year old girl who has faced near death experiences to a person who showed everyone that black people have just the same rights as anyone else does. “A hero is a ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles” they both have proved to be heroes.

Western and nonwestern heroes come from different regions of the world; therefore, have different cultural backgrounds. More specifically, western heroes come from the Greco-Roman or Judeo-Christian traditions. Nonwestern heroes come from other parts of the world that would not associate with these traditions. While these heroes might seem to have little in common when it comes to origin, “The Hero’s Journey” by Joseph Campbell demonstrates that all heroes have “similar patterns” (Campbell). However by examining the non-western hero, Mulan, in “The Ballad of Mulan” demonstrates how this figure is different than the hero outlined in Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey” in the following ways, Mulan does not have any kind of “supernatural aid”, “tests that lead to the final showdown”, or a “life-changing experience for her or many others” (Campbell).…

Throughout human history, great heroes have been created to triumph over man’s struggles. Most every culture has, in the past, told their own tales of heroes and their trials. These champions, while spread across our world and its ages, share some key characteristics with each other. This formulaic composition of heroes, while it can deviate, has stayed true since the dawn of history. This remains true with the Finnish hero god, Vainamoinen. (okay so his name has a bunch of umlauts and such but I can’t type that every time.)…
