A Lesson Before Dying takes place in Louisiana. Throughout the novel, a young girl, known as Vivian is the most stable and influential character in A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines. Even though she is still “married”, she and Grant have been able to maintain a romance. Although she is not a main character, Vivian plays a vital role in A Lesson Before Dying; she acts as Grant’s conscience and she differs drastically from Tante Lou and Miss Emma.…

    1. Although Elinor knew before that Edward and Lucy would probably be married, she was still very hurt by the news. This entire secrete marriage seemed somewhat odd to me, as a reader, because Jane Austen doesn’t foreshadow this event in the text. Robert Ferrars and Lucy Steele hardly seem to know each other. It seems to me that Jane Austen just placed this relationship into the plot instead of letting it naturally develop throughout the book.…

AND ONE!!!! It was the last basketball game of my sophomore season. We played Stagg at Home, in the main gym. Everyone was there because it was the last game and it was at home. Coach Thompson substituted me for Darius with 5 minutes and 42 seconds left to play, we were already up 10 so he just emptied out his bench to give everyone some final playing time. When I got in I instantly caught fire. I don’t know what got into me I just couldn’t miss, even if I wanted to. I was making mid- range shots, 3’s and I was also getting to the basket. My first shot was a pull up jumper about 15 feet away from the basket, it was nothing but net. After I made that shot I felt as if I could do anything, so I kept scoring. When I made my first 3, the team basically…

    A. “Why level down to our dullest perception always, and praise that as common sense?” -Humorous. Thoreau seems to be trying to imply that everyone views common sense in a different way. Why should we try to impress others with our own opinion of common sense, when common sense is viewed at a different perspective by each and every person.…

A sense of belonging can emerge from the connections made with people and the world. As we develop the understanding and acceptance, this allows us to feel belonging. The texts that I have studied have all explored how both understanding and the lack of understanding can impact on ones sense of belonging. "The Simple Gift", a narrative poem by Stephen Herrick's demonstrates elements of belonging, understanding and acceptance through the pain and suffering of rejection and homelessness faced by the characters Billy, Caitlin and Old Bill. Additionally in the film “Freedom Writers” Directed by Richard LaGravenese the concepts of belonging and understanding are brought out through Ms. Gruwell's attempt to bring a sense of community, solidarity and belonging to her students, whom society deems as outsiders.…

I come from a world where the only thing that is constant, is change. Changing states, changing houses, and changing schools. Unlike most other kids, I don't have a childhood home where I made countless memories, in fact, my earliest memories as a child all consist of cardboard moving boxes, along with unimaginably long car rides to foreign places. I don’t have a door marked to show how I've grown over the years, and I don't have a bedroom wall thick with paint covering over colors I chose as a child. Truthfully, often times when I was younger, and would see someone with these things, I was tempted to be envious and couldn't help but to think how lucky they were to have such stability. As a result of this, I spent a large portion of my childhood…

Shouts and laughter echo throughout the kitchen as my grandparents recount stories of growing up in Mexico as young adults. Everyone’s eyes light up with animation as family members contribute to the conversation while eating homemade tamales and menudo. At each of my family holiday gatherings, the dinner goes beyond the consumption of a home cooked meal. These family gatherings are very important to me and have contributed to who I am today.…

    Being Read To At Night

Being read to at night can be one of the best ways to go to sleep. I remember when I was a child when my mom would read me to sleep. It was one of the only ways I was able to sleep. My mom’s voice was so soothing and relaxing. I could hear her voice all day and night with no problem at all. What I liked about her reading to me was that she really engaged me with the story. Either by doing sound effects or saying something very loud or quiet. There were also nights where my dad would get involved. I loved it when they both read to me. It felt like a good family bond. All this happened in the house that I lived in my whole childhood. As I got older I got less interested in my parents reading to me at night. I would prefer watching television…
