A Jury of Her Peers (Literary Analysis of Symbols)
Literary Analysis of Symbols in
“A Jury of Her Peers”

I picked three symbols from the story A Jury of Her Peers. One of the symbols has to do with the investigation. The other two have to do with Minnie Wright.

A symbol in A Jury of Her Peers is “trifles”. Within the story, the men investigated the house to find evidence from the crime. They don’t pay attention to any of the small things (trifles), but the women do. The women end up figuring out more than the men. The men say, “Oh, I guess they’re not very dangerous things the ladies picked out.” This is ironic since the women have actually figured out the crime more than the men, while the men have no idea. I think this shows the ignorance of the men.

The bird and the birdcage is another symbol.
The bird was like Minnie Foster. The bird is trapped in the birdcage just like how Minnie is trapped in her bad marriage. The sheriff’s wife said, “She--come to think of it, she was kind of like a bird herself.” This is quite ironic because she symbolizes the bird and the bird is later found dead, just like her soul. Minnie Foster is just like the trapped bird in the cage because she was trapped in a bad marriage.

The rocking chair in the beginning of the story is a symbol. It represents the absent Minnie Wright. The chair was worn out and old. Her husband caused most of the destruction. Mrs. Hale thought, “...that rocker didn't look in the least like Minnie Foster--the Minnie Foster of twenty years before.” Is telling how the rocking chair used to be in good condition, just like Mrs. Wright. What ruined her was not her aging, but her bad marriage.

All symbols are pretty ironic in my opinion. The ones in the story have the most irony out of the ones I’ve read. Each one has to do with ironic themes such as death and

One significant reason for Mrs. Wright’s behavior was her relationship with Mr. Wright. Their relationship wasn’t good at all. Mr. Wright was seen as a good man, but he was known to neglect his wife. Mr. Wright showed no interest in anything that pleased Mrs. Wright, and he wouldn’t allow her to sing in the choir. Mr. Wright oppressed Mrs. Wright by not allowing her to leave the house or have any interaction with the outside world. The dead canary was also symbolic of how Mr. Wright wanted to kill anything that gave Mrs. Wright pleasure. The bird represented Mrs. Wright’s personality, and how sweet she was as an individual before she was married to Mr. Wright. The dead canary is the motive for why Mrs. Wright killed her husband. When Mr. Wright killed the bird, he killed her along with it. Mr. Wright’s cruel attitude and control over Minnie Foster caused her to change as a person. Her lively attitude had eventually decreased tremendously due to the ways she was treated by her husband. Clearly, Mrs. Wright’s relationship with Mr. Wright had caused her to behave abnormally.…

The ironic devices are used to further highlight the idea that Meursault doesn't belong in society. There's a part in the story that is considered to be situational irony, in the story Salamano quotes “I hope the dogs don't bark tonight. I always think it’s mine”. This is situational irony since one wouldn't expect for Salamano to miss his dog since he basically abuses it. The reason why this is important is because it show the humane side of Salamano something that Meursault doesn’t seem to be. That further shows that Meursault is so different from the rest of society. There is dramatic ironic when the court is in session, “Come now is my client on trial for burying his mother or for killing a man”. This is dramatic Irony because the reader…

This was a time period when women didn’t vote and really didn’t have an opinion to men. When the men left the kitchen they commented that, “But would the women know a clue if they did come upon it!” (Glaspell, 541) The women payed attention to the details of the kitchen and could tell that she had stopped in the middle of something. Mrs. Hale talked about how Minnie Foster used to be so cheerful and sang in the choir. Mrs. Hale thought to herself, “What had interrupted Minnie Foster?” (Glaspell, 542) She remembered worrying about how she had to un-expectantly leaving her kitchen a mess. The ladies found the bird cage and noticed that it had been damaged and wondered where the bird was. Later they found the bird in the box underneath the quilt blocks. They are the ones that put two and two together about how the bird was killed and the way Minnie’s husband was…

Themes in stories can be developed through many different means. It can be openly stated or just simply implied. Throughout history symbolism has been used to develop stories. Even in the bible there are multiple symbols that can be found. J.D. Salinger uses symbols to help readers understand the overall message and theme of his book The Catcher in the Rye. From Holden’s red hunting hat to Allie’s baseball mitt, symbols are constantly being thrown into the story. One other symbol that I think is highly significant is the ducks in Central Park.…

It can be said that Minnie Wright is a tragic hero because when she was Minnie Foster she had a noble stature by being well known by everyone and being part of the choir, but when she got married to John Wright, that changed. She lost her noble stature and her marriage became a punishment, therefore the punishment exceeds the crime. Mrs. Hale mentions that Minnie Foster was a noble stature when she says “I heard she used to wear pretty clothes and be lively, when she was Minnie Foster, one of those girls singing in the choir” (Glaspell 1394). It can be said that she was well-known by the town and people, and recognized because of the choir. It is confirmed when she says “I wish you’d seen Minnie Foster when she wore a dress with blue ribbons and stood up there in the choir and sang”. Once again it is mention that Minnie Foster was a noble stature. She loses her noble stature when she…

Symbols refer to ideas beyond the words, and are used to develop themes by making the reader interpret an idea for him/herself. To Kill A Mockingbird written by harper Lee in 1960 is a prime example of how symbolism can be effectively used to develop a theme. Lee uses many symbols throughout the novel to present thematic ideas to the reader. For example, the symbol of The Mockingbird is used to symbolize moral injustice. This symbol is essential to understanding the message of the book and is even referred to in the title. The mad dog is another important symbol used to represent challenges an individual must face, and the craziness of Maycomb. As a result, Harper Lee uses the symbols of The Mockingbird and The Mad Dog to develop the theme of a society’s moral injustice.…

Besides the symbolism in the story, the types of irony used, situational and dramatic irony help emphasize the image of a family dealing with each other while dealing with the phase of death. The family relations as well as the country environment are expressed through these types of irony. They often occur as while the book does deal with serious issues, the family dynamic is a big part of the novel and the people around them get involved with them.…

Wright, formerly Minnie Foster, used to sing before she married. After her marriage, she got a bird that sings. Mr. Wright, having already “killed” one form of singing, proceeds to do so with yet another form, the bird (paragraph 244). The bird is a reflection of Mrs. Wright’s pre-marriage personality, and when killed, it is essentially killing Minnie Foster again. The two women become sympathetic toward Mrs. Wright, backing up the desire to withhold the evidence of the dead bird. Meanwhile, the men are searching for evidence of motive, in order to convict Mrs. Wright. While the women are gathering belongings to take to Mrs. Wright, they discover an unfinished quilt that has some stitching that is out of place; Mrs. Hale decides that it would make Mrs. Wright happy if she fixed the stitching for her. The women also discover that Mr. Wright was murdered in the same fashion that the bird was killed. Mrs. Petersrecalls when her kitten was killed right in front of her, and remembers that she had wanted to “hurt” the person responsible, however, she was being held back. At that, she understands the emotions controlling Mrs. Wright and becomes more sympathetic to…

In the play, “Trifles,” Susan Glaspell demonstrates the inequality that occurs between men and women during the 20th century. From the opening scene, the two women are not given much attention unlike the men, until they are separated from them and become the main characters. Although the women are seen as inferior to men, they prove that they are much more capable as they are the ones who solve the case by thinking outside the box. They find the real motive behind Mrs. Wright’s action and are able to understand her doing because of the way women were treated back then. Even though both women decide to defend Mrs. Wright by hiding the evidence, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters sympathize with her, but for different reasons.…

One symbol that stuck out to me immediately was the image of the American flag. The American flag stand for freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Also it could stand for the American dream but these people in the film aren’t living the American dream. There work hard and they can barely make a living if even that. The second symbol that stuck out to me where the Christmas gifts that Mary Ventilli received from the shelter. There is a part when she said that she donated to people like her. But somehow life placed her in the situation where she required that help and donation from others.…

A symbol is a person, object, or event that represents ideas in addition to their literal meanings. There are many types of symbolism. There are conventional symbols, which are the classic symbols like the cross, representing faith; the U.S. flag, representing freedom; and the four-leaf clover, representing luck. Another type of symbolism is literary symbolism. Literary symbols are things like common buildings like homes, representing a feeling of safety and love. A literary symbol can be nearly anything in a story, from setting to actions, as long as it is important in a literal sense and also suggests a deeper meaning. There are also archetypal symbols. These are symbols that are ubiquitous and are often found in…
