Covers the body surface and forms the lining for most internal cavities. The major function of epithelial tissue includes protection, secretion, absorption, and filtration. The skin is an organ made up of epithelial tissue which protects the body from dirt, dust, bacteria and other microbes that may be harmful. Epithelial tissue covers the whole surface of the body. It is made up of cells closely packed and ranged in one or more layers. This tissue is specialised to form the covering or lining of all internal and external body surfaces
Functions of the epithelial tissue are:
The cell of the body surface forms the outer layer of skin.
Inside the body, epithelial cells forms lining of mouth & alimentary canal & protect these organs.
Epithelial tissues help in absorption of water & nutrient.
Epithelial tissues help in elimination of waste product.
There are different types of epithelial tissue, in different shapes for different things and areas:
Squamous epithelium.
Squamous cells are very thin and flat. Squamous cells nucleus tends to be horizontal flattened, elliptical because of the thin flattened form of the cell, it just forms a lump in the centre. . They form the lining of cavities such as the mouth, blood vessels, heart and lungs and make up the outer layers of the skin. The bottom layer of the cells is attached to the basement membrane for support and connection. The main function is allowing materials to pass through via diffusion and osmosis.
Cuboidal Epithelium.
Cuboidal cells are roughly, a cuboidal in shape. Each cell has a spherical nucleus in the centre. Cuboidal epithelium is found in glands and in the lining of the kidney tubules as well as in the ducts of the glands. They also constitute the germinal epithelium which produces the egg cells in the female ovary and the sperm cells in the male testes.
Columnar Epithelium
Columnar epithelial cells are built up in layers. The cells are elongated and column-shaped.
