In the play, A Man for All Seasons, characters have been evaluated by their own goods. Theses goods have been interpreted into apparent goods and real goods. Apparent goods, are classified as wants that create temporary happiness. Real goods, are recognized as needs that effect everyone positively. The main protagonist character is Thomas More, who has been named the new chancellor and is already awaiting complicated situations. In this brief essay I will provide reasons to why weather Thomas More is entitled a hero or a fool. In my opinion, Thomas More was a man of faith who was very noble. I may not have agreed with his decisions, but the way he lived his life was a respectable one. I believe Thomas More did what he thought was right in his mind. Being exceedingly educated, he had a way with words and reason. More did die, but he died a good man. He believed in God and knew he had no reason to do wrong. There could have been many opportunities for Thomas More to speak his opinion, but he remained silent. He never spoke his opinion because he thought it was not needed. Thomas more was no fool, but a hero because he held his morals, beliefs, and will high. Few people live this way, because they put apparent goods ahead of real goods. A great example of the would be the character Richard Rich. He is the exact opposite of Thomas More. He is portrayed as this man who is greedy and only strives to work his way up to power. I am not sure if I could do what Thomas More did. I would want to die honest and truthful to myself and under God just like Thomas More. If I lived the life Thomas More did, I would not have compromised my beliefs, values, or morals. In conclusion, I learned that many people in this movie live by apparent goods, which I think is a bad way of living. I think people should live life by real goods because it is a less stressful and much better way of living, in my opinion.
