A Midsummer Night’s Dream Theme Essay
When love is mentioned in a story, most people would think of it as romantic love. In
William Shakespeare’s
A Midsummer Night’s Dream couples fall in love both naturally and by spells causing romantic love and forced love to occur. This causes the platonic love between friends to fall apart and parental love to be strained. This play shows people that there are many different forms of love other than true love.
Shakespeare uses Lysander and Hermia as an example of romantic love, the lovers run off to get married at his aunts house, where the Athenian law does not affect them, “There, gentle
Hermia, may I marry thee; / and to that place the sharp Athenian law / cannot pursue us.” ( 1.1.163 ). Still madly in love they lie down near some trees to rest, when Puck arrives and mistakenly puts Lysander under a love spell. Lysander, who is madly in love with Hermia, now loves Helena because of the spell. When Lysander awakes, he runs off because his feelings towards Hermia have changed. This true love has been destroyed by magic.
Shakespeare uses Demetrius and Helena as an example of romantic love, both true and forced. Helena has been in love with Demetrius for awhile, but he did not return the mutual feelings. Demetrius suddenly is in love with Helena because of a spell Puck put on him, “The object and the pleasure of mine eye, is only Helena.” ( 4.1.171 ). It seems this speech is coming

from his heart and is possible the potion has worn off. This shows that maybe the spell helped him see that deep down in his heart he really loved Helena all along.
Shakespeare shows many types of love by putting the characters through scenarios where love is uncontrollable. There are many forms of love other than just romantic, such as parental, platonic, and forced love. By using different examples of love throughout

Blind love is common in todays society and culture. Shakespeare, a fifteenth century playwright, wrote “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” where four characters compete for with each other for love. One of the characters, Helena, is like the “fourth point in a triangle”, a love struck friend whose love interest is in love with her friend. Helena desperately loves Demetrius who constantly rejects her. She is the love-struck friend, desperately in love and is insecure about herself, this makes her persistent and foolish.…

A retrospective understanding of an author’s context, allows us to identify and contrast between the social values apparent in their respective literature. This is evident in both Shakespeare’s 16th century play ‘Othello’ and Geoffrey Sax’s 2001 variation. Both texts explore the differences in human nature; such as revenge and discrimination in the form of gender inequality and racial prejudice and this can be seen as a reflection it its context. Since these ideas are constant throughout both texts a comparative analysis would indicate the differing values of the society of each text. Shakespeare’s Othello has been crafted for an Elizabethan audience, thus he’s given importance to a higher supernatural figure as that was the belief of their time. In comparison Sax portrays a more modern ideology such as science…

    Abolition of Slavery

Slavery in the United States first started in 1619, when African slaves were transported to Jamestown, a settlement in the colony in Virginia. These slaves were brought to the United States primarily to help with the making of crops, especially tobacco. The practice of slavery remained present throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in other colonies of the United States, which helped build and strengthen the American economy as a whole. In 1793, the cotton gin was invented, which triggered the immense importance of the practice of slavery towards the success of the economy in the southern parts of the United States. On the other hand, the northern parts of the United States experienced a rapid growth and dispersal of abolitionist laws and activities, which displayed a great amount of hatred towards the practice of slavery in the United States. The United States Congress made African slave trade or international slave trade illegal in 1808, but it did not hold back the practice of domestic slavery that was becoming even larger in the United States. The act of trading between the colonies in the United States flourished, and by 1860, the amount of slaves in the United States unfortunately tripled, and reached to four million. The expansion of pro-slavery beliefs in the western parts of the United States in addition to the increase in abolitionists in the northern parts of the United States soon caused a tremendous debate over slavery, which practically tore the United States apart.…

I grew interested in the play’s conflict, since it seems modern day typical. I, for one, enjoy watching love stories and dramas. This play, served just that purpose. Reading of the avenged lover’s, Hermia and Lysander, plan to run into the forest to marry seemed likely to be seen on a Wednesday night, 9:00PM, drama series. Which, I absolutely love! Then, the play takes a twist from reality. Helena acquires information related to Hermia and Lysander’s plan to marry, which provides her initiative to tell Demetrius. She intends on winning back the love of Demetrius. The two of them go out in search of the Lysander and Hermia, and find that they’ve all landed themselves in a forest filled with “fairies.”…

Upon speaking with Demetrius, Lysander, Helena, and Hermia, we have discovered the strange adventure of the days leading up to their marriage. Both couples had very interesting stories to tell. To start, Hermia’s father Egeus was forcing Hermia to marry Demetrius. Demetrius is very accepting of this situation, even though he just got out of a relationship with Hermia’s friend Helena. Demetrius is also aware that Hermia doesn’t love him but Helena does. When we asked Hermia how she replied to her father’s demand she said, “But I beseech your grace that I may know The worst that may befall me in this case, If I refuse to wed Demetrius.” Clearly she was against this decision, and that is why she and her lover Lysander decided to run away from…

One love that Shakespeare shows in Midsummer is passion. Passion is a burning emotion, a strong feeling or a desire that is deep within your soul. When you have found the perfect man/ women you will be passionately in love. The lovers that show this in the play are Lysander and Hermia. The two of them really define the passion and true love. Lysander and Hermia are determined to be with each other, but are denial by Egeus (Hermia’s father). Egeus wants Hermia to marry Demetrius, but she is in love with Lysander. Egeus and Theseus (The Duke of Athens) then agree that if Hermia does not marry Demetrius she is either to become a nun or die. When Hermia is alone with Lysander she tells him, “Belike for what of rain, which I could well/ Beteem them from the tempest of my eyes” (1.1.130). In this quote she is telling Lysander that because of all this commotion, her eyes are starting to fill with water and about to cry. With Lysander being the faithful and uplifting person he is he replies, “Ay me! For aught that I could ever read/ could ever hear by tale or history, / The course of true love never did run smooth” (1.1.132). In this quote Lysander is telling Hermia that from everything he has heard from stories and history, the path of true love was never easy. Determined to be with each other, Lysander and Hermia decide to run away to marry each other. They are eventually caught up to and returned to Athens, but are…

She becomes a strong minded girl like Hermia. She over comes her insecurity of love with Demetrius and denies his love, instead of him denying her love like in the play. Helena’s role in the play demonstrates another stereotypical role of women; she comes off as weak and a “home-wrecker”. Yet, in the film Helena doesn’t care for Demetrius as much, so she decides to destroy the love between Hermia and Lysander. Although Helena has no longer begged for Demetrius’ love, she is still in the wrong for trying to destroy her best friend’s…

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies, is generally thought of as a comical romance. A very important factor that makes the whole play a comedy, is magic, which is used to affect the lives of four Athenians: Hermia, Lysander, Helena and Demetrius. Bottom, also a simple human, falls victim of the fairies’ mischievous magic. The magic reaches these characters by Puck, a naughty fairy, and Oberon, the king of fairies. Puck decides to cast a spell on Bottom, making him grow a donkey head, and Oberon decides to cast a spell on Titania, making her fall in love with Bottom. From a simple mistaken spell, a rollercoaster of emotions, conflicts and laughter emerge. Magic is a vital element in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” because it gives the four Athenians a new life after the two men get cast a spell on, and Titania, falling in love with an ass head. Magic also causes the lovers to find that love is no smooth enterprise as stated by Lysander; "The course of true love never did run smooth." (1-1 ll. 134). Their pursuit of love may not run smooth but most, although not all, of the lovers end up happy. Hermia and Lysander find that they cannot be together so they elope to the woods where they then become victims of Puck and Helena cannot seem to make Demetrius love her until Puck's interference, and then she does not believe it.…
